REVEIW OF MARKETS
New York. April "..?The market was
lircry irregular to-day, violent fluctua?
tions being frequent. Sharp recessions
appeared early. The market rallied
?with a burst of strength in the rail?
ways in the hope <u" a favorable crop
report. A sensational rise occurred in
cull money, as high as 16 per c< lit. being
exacted for loans oh Industrial collater?
al and later 15 per cent, was reach d
even on railways. Tue greater part ol
the day bans were much below this
figure, although it was quite general to
charge a higher rate on industrial col?
lateral than on that of railways. In?
tensive liquidation followed the appi tr?
ance of the highest money rat-, s ? far
this season! There wer.- many breaks
of from 2 to 4 points from the highest
quotations of the day, but stocks re?
covered on covering and ?! p< r Cl nt.
money at the close, leaving the list
slightly above yesterday's figures, with
the tone steady. London sold a small
amount of stock. Manhattan receded
over two points, and Third Avenue live.
Brooklyn Transit and American Steel
and Wire were lifted over two points
each. A rise of S% points in Mexican
Central on enormous dealings was said
to relate to u plan to re-distribute the
capital, but nothing delluite came for?
ward. Much of the buying of this Btock
was said to come from Boston. Mex?
ican National had a sympathetic rise
of over a point. The talk of favorable
business prospects of Wabash lifted the
preferred stock a substantial fraction
or. large dealines.
Considerable activity and strength
was displayed in some sections of the
bond market, but the general tone was
uncertain. Total sales, $3,790,000.
United States new 4's declined in
the bid price.
The total sales of stocks were ST?.421
shares.

showiii Insignificant further variations,

bullish or bearish purport, news
from abroad and the South failed sig?
nally to appreciably influence senti?
ment which, in the main, was favora?
ble to a contraction rather than a
broadening of ventures. Tho feature of
operations wa.s the buying of May and
August contracts by Liverpool and
Continental representatives, who sub?
sequently sold the new crop positions.
Local longs, notably Wall street bouses,
supplied cotton wanted for nearby de?
livery and took a fresh bold in tli? more
distant mouths, these latter purchases
being chiefly in Oc tober and January.
Scalpers were indifferent and took prac
tically no part in the day's doings In
the pit. Tho closing was quiet and
Bteady, with prices 1 point higher to a

yesterday, initial English news was ot
