Review oe the Markets; Shipping News; and Real Estate Rusre^s. REVIEW OF MARKETS FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stock, Money, Exchange Bonds, Grain, Cotton, Provisions, Etc. New York, May 17.?When It was an? nounced on Monday morning that some of the most powerful financial inter? ests in the country had banded them? selves together for the (support of prices in the stock market, it dissipated very largeiy the timidity of holders of the group of securities which had been no marvelously Increased In price under the favoring activities of the late ex Governor Flower. It also caused the professional operators who always stand ready to attack values of secu? rities at any vulnerable point, to pause In their purpose and cover short con? tracts left outstanding since Saturday. Ifhe capitalists behind the Flower group apparently felt so much encouraged with the firmness and confidence dis? played by the market since the crisis that they made up their minds to com? plete Its rehabilitation and to put prices back to where they were on Friday last. It was not until the latter part of tho day that this purpose seemed to be taken seriously In hand, in fact the Flower stock? as a group were conspic? uously quiet during the early part ot the day. Their position seemed to be left to the natural course of events and the general trend of the market. It was the events of the day In the gen? eral market that seemed to confirm the purpose of the financial leaders. These events were a very marked disinclina? tion on the part of the present li ilders of securities to proceed with any liqui? dation and a quiet and persistent out? side demand for a wide range of stocks. Home very large transactions in bonds, especially in recent or contemplated is? sues of railroads of the 8% and 4 per cent, grades were also in evidence of the pressing demand for investment from a large reserve of capital. The money market was notably easy, and advices from different points in the Interior were of large funds on hand. The statements of St. Paul's gross earnings for the second week in May showing an Increase of over $24,000 compared with the corresponding week last year, when the extraordinary grain movement incident to the Leiter deal was in progress; was taken to indicate a continued prosperous condition ot railroad traffic. London also showed a favorable disposition toward American railroads, and advanced prices before the opening here. And although part of the purchases were again sold here later, having some possible effect In strengthening the rate of exchange on London, the sales were not In sufficient volume to threaten the money market here. More mature consideration of the trade statistics for April disclosed the continued strong position of our Inter? national commerce, notwithstanding unfavorable comparisons at some points with the unprecedented period of last year. The market gradunlly but per? sistently hardened under these various influences early in the day. Central and Southern Pacific, Chicago Terminal, the Iron and Steel shares, Sugar and Tobacco, and New York Municipal cor? poration stocks advancing sharply. In the late afternoon the market leaders undertook to push up Brooklyn Transit to where it was last Friday. This they did through a flood of offerings and held It there to the close, over 7 points above yesterday's close. People's Gas, the Federal Steel stocks. International Paper, Rock Island and Atchlson pre? ferred are from 1 to 4 points higher. The railroads shared very generally In the later strength of the market, tiie clese being buoyant and active at the very top. The large demand fur bonds s.night persistently for pretty much all issues not already at prohibitive prices. To? tal sales. $4.Sno,000. U. New York, May 17.?From opening to close the shorts were kept in an un? easy frame of mind and at times cover? ed freely, as a result of bullish infor? mation from the cotton belt, abroad, and in tact from nearly all directions. The market made a quiet and linn Start with prices 1 to 3 points higher nnd Steadily improved as the session pro? gressed, reaching at the best figures n gain of (5 to 7 points. The better feeling at the opening was due in a measure to unmistakable evidences of firmness In the future department and a renewal of heavy demand for spot cotton at Liver? pool. Private cables attested that the European cotton trade had regarded the weekly weather bulletin as of bull? ish purport. To-day's Information from 1lid Sollth led "15 the Impression that rains were badly needed In a number of sections, that the crop was not making good stands, except possibly in Texas, and that Insects were h -ginning to ravage cotton over large actons. The official weather report Indicated high temperature nnd almost a total absence of rains over the entire region nnd the forecast was for generally fair weather for the next day or two. Encouraging reports were received from Southern spot markets. The advance in the local market brought out n fair number of investment orders and did much to Instill fresh confidence Into many heretofore feeble bulls. Anton;; the factors contributing to the firm ness was n sttocp iiilviuco In-t-hr Ntrw Orleans ma rite; primarily due to in? creased nnles at Liverpool nnd less fa? vorable weather reports, which led to a bear soirro of May shorts.
