Ilron Nvciiroil,
For some time one of the largest ship?
building linns in America has been In
correspondence with a Norfolk gentle?
man relative to establishing at this port
a complete plant for the building of
vess. ls of all kinds, of wood or steel.
The projectors of the undertaking
have become aware of Norfolk's prom?
ises of great future growth und the un?
surpassed location of thl3 city as re?
lated to the South and West and their
rapidly growing Interests.
Through a. Norfolk agent the com?
pany has secured an option on a large
water front In a very desirable loca?
tion. In a few days one of Its repre?
sentatives will be In Norfolk to make
further investigations. If these are sat?
isfactory it Is understood that the com?
pany will at once begin work on Its
plant, with a large force of men and
push It to a speedy completion. It Is
understood that nt present they are
considering the establishment of n
plant here very favorably, as la Indi?

have already done.
COTTON SEED OIL MILL.
ONE MAY BE STARTED HERE
WITH OUTSIDE AND LO?
CAL CAPITAL.
It Is rumored In business circles that
a large cotton seed oil mill may be es?
tablished in or nenr Norfolk In the
near future. In fact, if rumor Is re?
liable, the negotiations have reached
the stage that nlmost make it an as?
sured fact.
It Is stated that tho agent of a
large concern that operates several cot?
ton seed and linseed oil mills, has been
spending some lime In Norfolk of late,
presumably to complete the necessary
arrangements for the establishment of
this new enterprise and that he is ex?
pected back again this week to close
the deal.
Whie here he was In consultation
with local capitalists and It is said that
local capital will be largely repre?
sented In the mill. Norfolk Is generally
recognized as an excellent distributing
point, and, ns It is the center of a rich
trucking section, it Is also a local
market for the sale of large quantities
of fertilizers into many of which cot?
ton seed enters largely after its oil has
been se.-urod for other uses.
This fact alnne has, no doubt, been
carefully considered by the projectors
of the mill.
Renk Ins? it Location,
Rev. Chas. I. Stengle yesterday re?
ceived a letter from a Delaware party
ntklng what the prospects are for an?
other steam laundry In this city.
A favorable answer was sent him and
he will probably be here in a few days
to look over the field.
EMPLOYES HALF HOLIDAY.
MILLER. RHOR.ES & CO. INAUGU?
RATE THEIR NEW DEPAR?
TURE.
Several days ago the VIrglnlan-Pllot
noted the Tact that the firm of Miller,
Rhodes & Co. had arranged to give Its
employees a half-holiday every Friday
afternoon dining July and August.
The first half-holiday was ftxr-fl. for
Friday, and that it was a success In
every particular is attested by every
one of the linn's employees. The linn
not only gave its help a half-holiday,
but planned to make it a "sure 'nuf"
holiday by making all of its employees
their guests to and at Ocean View.
Shortly after 1 o'clock yesterday af?
ternoon two street oars, the first one
gaily decorated with bunting and the
second bearing Immense streamers, mi
which were tho words "Miller,, Rhoades
& Co.?Employes Half Holiday," left
the store of Miller, Rhoailes Ac Co. en
route to the Ocean View denot. The
two cam wore loaded with the happy
clerks of this large store.
They filled one car and. with some of
their friends, who Joined them, over
, Mowed into a second car. Arriving at
the View the party werj registered nt
the. Ocean View Hotel as the guests of
Miller, l'hoades & Co. A line dinner was
enjoyed and then followed boating,
bathing, bowling and admission to the
best seats at the pavillion theatrical
entertainment, all at the expense of the
firm.
The party left O.-ean View for the re
turn trip at " p. in. The clerks unani?
mously passed a vote of thanks to the
firm for Its generosity and will be
prepared to do a big day's work to-day.
In further recognition of the scrvlcca
of its staff of employees. Miller, Rhodes
&? Co. will give each clerk a two
weeks' vacation with one week's salary.

BIG PROPERTY TRANSFER.
OVER $1,000 INT REVENUE STAMPS
ON THREE DEEDS.
Thoro was recorded In the Clerk's of?
fice yesterday a deed transferring the
warehouse property of the Norfolk
Warehouse Company, In Atlantic City
Ward, to the Norfolk Warehouse Asso?
ciation, the latter company having been
recently chartered iu the Corporation
Court of Norfolk.
The Norfolk Warehouse Company
goes out of existence with this trans?
fer of its property, and tho Norfolk
Warehouse Association, with the same
officers?Mr. John R. Vaughan, presi?
dent; Mr. J. W. Perry, vice-president,
and Mr. Fergus Held, treasurer?takes
its place. The deed transfers all the
warehouse property of that company In
Atlantic City, consisting of building!,,
cotton presses, an Ice plant, machinery
and other appurtenances.
This ia one of the largest transfers
of property that has been recorded It,
Norfolk for several years. It required
$000 worth of United States Internal
revenue stamps to make the transfer.
This is the war tax on documents of
this kind, which, by/tho way, iu accu?
mulating a lot of money for Uncle Sam
here In Norfolk, because of the large
number of real estate transfers, a trust
deed recorded by the Colonial Trust
Company, of New York, conveying this
same warehouse property, required $i'oo
In revenue stamps, thus making a total
of $800 internal revenue tax on this
transfer.
ANOTHER RIG TRANSFER.
A transfer by the Virginia Realty
Company, of Norfolk, to the Norfolk
Hampton Reads Company, recorded In
tho County Court at Portsmouth yes?
terday, which required $2St In revenue
Stamps. The amount paid for tha
transfer of real estate was $2S3,230.
WAS KNOCKED DOWN.
AND NOW NATHAN METZGER
SUES HIS ASSAILANT FOR
DAMAGES.
Nathan Metzger, .a tobacconist well
known In Norfolk, yesterday entered
suit In the Court of Law and Chan
eery for $1,000 against Thomas Slarkey,
equally well known as a huckster. Tha
suit is for damages alleged to havo
been sustained by Metzger in a per?
sonal difficulty with Starkey.
The rase of assault nga'.nst Starkey
wns tried in Police Court n few weeks
ago. Starkey was fined $10 and costs,
which ho paid. It was alleged by Metz?
ger that Starkey attacked )iim without
insinuation, knocking him down.
Motzcor has employed Messrs. Loyall
<fc Taylor to represent him as counsel.
The case Is a unique one, and will
create considerable interest.

coming from a man who had been
keeping a casual eye on the political
situation in the State, would not be
worthy of more credence than the
common newspaper g issip and specu?

and there 13 every reason to believe
that he has his Information from the

This gentleman did not malte the'

did not authorize the use of his name
to back it tip?but he unreservedly
stated that the Governor would run for!
the Senate If his (the Governor's) mind
didn't change In a very few days. It
was furthermore staled that the an?

Governor Tyer Is said to be very
