Review of the Markets; Shipping News; and Real Estate Business. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks, Honey, Exchange, Bonds, Grain, Cotton, Provisions, Etc. New York, July 18.?The stork mar? ket continued dull and neglected aim wt to the point of. stagnation to-day. Prices drifted quite aimlessly up and down, except In a few stocks, which were influenced by Individual causes and net changes for the most part wer. very email. The opening showed BOiue slight animation and higher prices In sympathy with Lonrtgji. which had ad? vanced Americans before the opening here, and which seemed to take a more cheerful view of the general outlook. The money outlook there was reported rather easier in tone, but the Hank "f England continued to do practically all of the money lendlsg at n rate well above Its official minimum rate of dis? count and sterling exchnrige at con? tinental centers showed additional sharp advances. In New York money was rather easier in tune, but the rates still continued above those at some other domestic centres bo that the sterl? ing exchange market, though hard, was not quotably higher. It is Intimated that money rates may be held up In New York to prevent an outflow Of gold and the additional suggestion is heard that Chicago may supply London with some gold on direct movement. There are Increasing offerings of Chicago funds In New York. Statements of rail? road earnings continue to break pre? vious records, St. Paul leading to-day's returns with its second week of July increase of I231.G33 over last year. To? day's recovery in Brooklyn Transit amounted to two points net, and in Metropolitan Street Railway to 1%. Notwithstanding the favorable in dents the local stock market showed no Inclination to follow London's early lead, and the opening gains were esoon lost. The only movement of any im? portance was in Isolated stocks, mostly Industrials. Sugar and Manhattan showed early depression, which was not entirely overcome ;n the case uf the lat? ter, though the former shown a small net gain. American Smelting n-sc at one time 2% and General Electric 1%, but both reacted a point. Air Brake rose six points and then dropped It. The Tobacco stooks came Into late de? mand and gained from I'i to L'y?. the latter in Continental Tobacco com? mon. Rubber preferred. Leather pre? ferred. Tennessee Coal, Tin Plate, Fed? eral Steel, People's fjus and o f?w other stooks had periods of strength. New York Central more than recovered yesterday's decline and some firmness was manlfeal among the Grangers. Pa? cifies and Trunk lines, but the Coalers, Southwosterns and Southern stocks showed a slightly yielding disposition. The whole day's business looted up only a little, over a quarter of a million shares, and Brooklyn Transit, Sugar sind Manhattan absorbed a large pro? portion of this. Tho bond market was also very dull nnd price changes were small and tnix fd ns in stocks. 17. S. it's coupon declined M nnd the old 4's registered %. while the old t's coupon advanced H Jn the bid price. The total snles of stocks to-day were 262.1.00 shares. Standard Oil, 4.5S>4G>4.60. New York, July IS.?For a time this morning the cotton market acted as if it was about to do a little better. The opening call developed a very steady feeling, w nil prices unchanged to 2 points higher, The Immediate cause of Hie improvement was the stability shown by the EngllHh market as com? pared With what had been expected. At the same time crop news wan not Of an unevenly favorable quality, although generally still very good. Tho iocal bull contingent tried tr> help the bud? ding Irnproveiw nt. bul i: was soon blighted by the efforts of tho bears, who took advantage of tho fact that outside orders failed to come In. and they sold the little thai wus necessary to turn lb- market back to last night's figure -and dullness. For the rest of the day the marke! worked within very narrow channels mid ruled fea? tureless until near the close, when a spurt of covering carried prices rapid? ly upward, with .1 marke; Anally steady at n net gain of 10 4 points. There was plenty of crop news in circulation, but nothing thai was really new and hesitation was as marked on the part of the bull contingent as it was on lh* part of the more bearlshly In I ??? i The afternoon phases of the n ? 1 k- ? had all the waiting characteristics and was entirely local. Commission-house* had practically no orders from tin country at large. Representntiv - 01 foreign linul;cs were equally without trading basts.
