Petersburg, Va., July 18.?This city was visited yesterday afternoon and last night by a m06t violent wind and rain storm. The wind blow a perfect gale and trees and fencing In different parts of the city were leveled to the ground and telephone and telegraph wires badly disarranged. In Prince George's county, a short distance from Petersburg, the storm was even more severe than here. Immense trees were uprooted by the force of the wind, while others wero denuded of their branches. Harns and other outhouses were blown down and much fencing de? stroyed. Mr. J. IT. Shcrrlll, of Memphis. Tonn., who was recently elected general sec? retary of the Young Men's Christbin Association in this city, entered upon his duties here to-day. SERIOUSLY INJURED BY A FALL. A BRIDE OF TWO MONTHS DIES. Mrs. Bettle S. Ellington, whose un? timely death last Sunday was caused by typhoid fever, was In her 20th year and had been married only two months. Tho funeral took place yesterday after? noon. MR. CHARLES PEEBLES DEAD. Mr. Charles Peebles, who was strick? en with paralysis Saturday at bis home on Perry street, died last night at 0 o'clock. The deceased was oho of Pe? tersburg's best known citizens, and at the time of hit" death was employed as bookkeeper at W. E. Armstrong's drug Store. During the war between the Slates he was in the medical department of the Confederate States Army. He was u member of a. p. Hill Camp of Confed? erate Veterans. Mr. Peebles at one lime edited and published a newspaper in this city. He leaves a widow with three Bons. Mr. John k. Peebles, nn archi? tect of Norfolk, and Messrs. Scott, wife of Robert E. Scott, of the low firm of S. oti & Staples, died Sun? day night at the home of her father, Decatur Hall, In Loudoun county, after a brief illness, aged 3S years. The re? mains were brought to Roanoke. and this afternoon funeral services were held. M. J. Knvanaugh, of the Roanoke Machine Works, and Miss Maude Stin? nett, daughter of H. C. Stinnett, were married to-night at St. Andrew's Cath? olic Church, ltev. Father Lynch officiat? ing. DEATH OF A PROMINENT MASON. Mr. S. K. Crap, father of Samuel E. Crap, of this city, died in Philadelphia on Friday, aged SO years, from appendi? citis. The deceased was a prominent Mason a member of ML Moriah Lodge, No. 155. of Philadelphia. He was at ono time a resident of Roanoke, and a frequent visitor at the local lodges. He had been confined to his bed for nineteen months. MR. LUNSFORD TO BE ORDAINED. Next Sunday at 11 a. in., Rev. W'in. Lunsford will preach his farewell ser? mon before leaving Virginia for his new Kentucky home. DANVII.I.E. DR. ANDERSON INDICTED FOR ATTEMPT TO MURDER. Danville, Va.. July 18.?Dr. John C. Anderson was indicted by the grand Jury of Ptttsylvanla county, at t'liat hom, for attemnt a! murder. At the June term nf the court he> was indicted for the alleged betrayal of Miss Wat? son, daughter of a well known farmer. The young woman committed suicide' on June 1, leaving a. note in which she said she took her life because of her shame, of which Dr. Anderson was the author, nnd staling that he furnished her with the poison with which she would take her life. Soon after Miss Watson's death An? derson transferred his property to hla brother. Captain Edward Anderson, of the United States Army, and to his wife and left the vicinity. It was said he was in Canada and that he would return to Chatham yesterday, the first day of tho County Court, and stand trial for the first indictment. He did not show up. however. .W. A.. B. Watson, father of the girl, has Instituted suit against Anderson | for heavy damages for the betrayal or his daughter, and If he gets a judg? ment will contest the legality of the deeds by which Anderson transferred his property to his brother, Tho indictment of yesterday was found rut the testimony of physicians, who testified that certain drugs Dr. Anderson sent Miss Watson, two "i three weeks before she died, would have ki?
