Ca in ne dir strip Beuden it iucuu veiilout (<? ii 1111 .i NyiinsosH" Wliicli win Fnoa (oiitrresnilou to tin* Enslvriini im Is llio Cuntoui, The trustees or the Ohet Sholem Tem? ple want a re-uppralseinent of thoir property on f Freemason street, which was among- that condemned for the ex? tension of Tripoli street. They claim that the award of tho condemnation commissioners was too low and nsU Judge Hanckcl, of the Corporation Court, to appoint a new commission. The matter was argued before him yes? terday and he has It under advisement. Not only do the Ohof Sholem trustees claim the award of $100 per front foot for the 16Vi feet of their property con? demned was too low simply from the staudpoint of the worth of tbe real estate, but they claim that the cutting off of. this much from their ICO tout lot will interfere with their plans to build a Jewish Synagogue thereon, and that the whole property is thus depreciated In value, In that It will not answer for tho purposes for which the trustees bought It. They claim this fact should be taken into consideration In making the award for the sirio that has been condemned. In the hearing yesterday a number of witnesses were Introduced .on both sides. Mr. I. Moritz, president of the Ohof Sholem congregation, was among these. Mr. Moritz explained that it was the invariable custom to build Jewish temples of worship so that the congre? gation would face the east. The 100 foot lot on Freemason street was pur? chased at the cost of SS.C00 anil it was considered the only suitable and con? venient location which the trustees could secure. The cutting of lO's feet oft of this lot, it was claimed, mad-- It loo small for the purposes intended and rendered it inconvenient to build a synagogue thereon after the plan which must bo followed ?that Of facing the congregation to the eastward. Several real estate owners-were In? troduced as witnesses. They estimated that $125 per front foot for the prop? erty was a reasonable price. The con? demnation commissioners awarded $100 per front foot, or $1,G50 for that por? tion of the lot condemned- While the properly only cost $S3 per front foot about three years uko, it is claimed that It was bought for an extreme ly low price. It is a pan of the old Tunis property. City Attorney Walter IT. Taylor, who represented the city, argued that tho award of tbe commissioners was BUfll clent. and claimed that the 8314 feet left was sufficient to erect a house of worship as large as Epworlh Churcli, or St. Luke's. Mr. Jnmes F. Duncan is counsel for the Ohef Sholem trustees. LAST OF HER NAME. THE FUNERAL. AND INTERMENT OF MISS LIVINGSTON. The funeral of Miss Herbert T. TED BY FATHER WILSON. On last Sunday, Rev. Father T. X Wilson, nastor of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, gave a very pleasing and satisfactory report of the fifteen days' mission, recently given In his church, by Fathers Gilllspie and Gleu Bon of the Society of Jesus. This mission closed Sunday, the 19lh Instant. Father Wilson most sincerely thanked God for the result of the mission und cordially congratulated not only Ids own parshloners, but also all those who, at ? sacrlllce, availed themselves of that extraordinary opportunity o,f reconciling themselves with God; their neighbors and their own sin-laden con? science. Ho warmly encouraged them to per sevorance in their newness of life, and to remember these memorable words of our Divine Lord, "He that perse vereth to the end shall be saved," and again those other words, spoken to the Apostolic Band, "I have chosen you and appointed you, that you should go forth, and that you should bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain." Father Wilson said .there were many honest Inquirers into the claim of the Catholic Church, upon human belief during tho mission. All these ques? tions, said Father Wilson, "were clear? ly and satisfactory answered, - but as tho Catholic Church is slow in re? ceiving, either members of other re? ligious bodies, or even those who have never been baptised, without n full course of preparation for admission to her membership, not one of those who Inquired were baptised, but were re? ferred to me by the missionaries priests for further enligbtment and prepara? tion." After referring to the mission and its result, Father Wilson preached an ex? cellent sermon, taking for his Bubject, "The Forerunners of the World's Dis? solution." "The expense of 1be mission was , $125," said Father Wilson, "and when I gave my check to Father Gilllspie he would not accept It. He destroyed It and I made out another for S100, which I finally persuaded him to ac? cept. This money will go to the col? lege, where young men are studying for the priesthood, and not n cent goes to either of the priests who conducted tbe mission at my church." Rev. M. F. Snnfortl.
