Tho Sabbath Day.
The Bible lesson which is to be
studied throughout the world this week
Is on "Keeping the Sabbath." Golden
text?"Remember the Sabbath Day to
Keep It Holy"--Ex. xx, S.
"Memory verses" as follows: "Then
I contended with the nobles of Judah,
and said unto them, What evil thing
Is this that ye do, and profane the
Sabbath day? Did not your fathers
thus, and did not our God bring all
?this evil upon us, and upon this city?
Yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel
by profaning the Sabbath"?Neh. xlli?
17-18.
"If thou turn away thy foot from the
Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on
my holy day; and call the Sabbath a
dolig/ht, the holy of the Lord, honora?
ble: and shnlt honor him, not doing
thine own ways, nor finding thine own
pleasure, nor speaking thine own
words; then shnlt thou delight thyself
In the Lord: and I will cause thee to
rido upon the high places of the earth,
and feed thee with the heritage of
Jacob, thy father: for tho mouth of the
Lord hath spoken it."?Isa. Ivill?13-14.
Rev. A. R. Coke, D. D., says in con?
nection with this subject:
"Iniquity presses on the church from
every side as the ocedn presses in on
the dikes which defend Holland."'" Let
the least spot give way and soon the
flood gates are open, and the mighty
restless ocean Is pouring through.
"Wo fight evils best by fighting be?
ginnings. Established evils are hard
to fight. It Is as difficult as to cut off
the nine heads of tho Lernen Hydra, In
which case two heads sprung up when
one was cut off.
"The Sabbath brings in the best In?
fluence for character building, while to
break that sacred law ruins character
and corrupts a nation.
"Of one hundred men admitted to tho
Massachusetts State's prisons, eighty
nine had lived In habitual violation of
the Sabbath.
Hurlbut thus sums up the crime of
Sabbath breaking: 1, Against God.
who commanded It to ho kept; 2,
Against society, which becomes demor?
alized and Iniquitous without Its ele?
vating Influence; 3, Against the body,
which needs It for rest; 4, Against the
soul, which needs it for religious ad?
vancement."
Among the many things for which we
have to be thankful to-day is that we
are here in a land where the Christian
Sabbath Is honored and respected, and
let us use our best endeavors to pre?
vent Its desecration either by business
or what on other days might be Inno- j
cent recreation.
Temperance Legislation Desired.
Mrs. Thomas P. Bagby, of West

on the body and the different organs
thereof. The bill will be introduced
by Mr. John Whltehead, one of Nor?
folk's representatives in the House of
Delegates.
Every State In the Union, with the
exception of Virginia, Georgia, and
Utah, liavo this law, and the effect of
alcohol on the system Is also taught
