Review of the Markets; and Real Estate Business. REVIEW OF MARKETS FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Mocis, Money, Exchange, Bonds, Grain, Cotton, Provisions, Etc. New York, Jan. 12.?The opening sales bf Sugar afford convincing evidence] that its friends have rallied to its sup? port und were prepared to contest the progress which the bears have made in cutting down its price. Very heavy blocks were thrown upon the market at the opening, but the quotation was lifted from 113 to 114 on running sales In the first transactions of the day. The opening price was the lowest. After the stock got above last night's level the bears renewed their efforts to de? press it again, but without success. The resistance shown by the slock caused uneasiness In the ranks of the unwieldy /short interest, sind they started to cov *r. They carried the stock up to 118, near which it closed.' There was no further signs of the acute weakness which was shown yesterday by the lo? cal traction stocks and Tobacco, which was said to be due to (lie closing out of an embarrassed account. These stocks were under pressure during the morning, but they responded to the re? covery in Sugar and lato general strength In the market, and rose vigor? ously to last night's level. ? The relax? ation of the pressure; on Sugar played no small part in the general strength of the market. Ituilroads advanced at] the opening In sympathy with strength abroad, but llicy were not embarrassed by demoralization in the specialties, and so gained strength as the day pro? gressed. All the principal stocks rose from one to two points over last night's level and closed strong at the top. Some very heavy blocks of Baltimore nnd Ohio were taken in in the late deal- I ings by the circulation o? rumors of approaching dividend declaration. Tin market broadened out notably in the! late dealings on the improved senti? ment in foreign financial circles and in I expectation of a strong bank state-1 menu The Bank of Germany followed the | other European government banks to? day by reducing it's minimum discount I rate from seven to six per cent., and the rapid downward course of private discount rates in London gave confi? dence in still further reductions in the | bunk rates.' London also took a sanguine vie\v of j the advantage of General Holler's new position on the Tugela river. Money was in abundant supply, and rates for lime loans were shaded to per cent, on railroad collateral. Call loans fell to ;t per cent. Sub-Treasury operations had yielded to the banks $3,433,000 tip to Thursday night. The pel gain of the hanks on the regular express movement with the Interior is j estimated at about the same amount. This is exclusive of heavy receipts by registered mail. From these amounts must be deducted last Saturday's gold exports, as well as $1,0(10,000 In gold Which went to South America, to-day. The net gain by banks on all accounts | is figured at about $4.000,000. The bond market continued dull, but | was strong. Total sales par value, $2,103,000. United Stales 3's registered, declined 14; but the r.'s advanced % In the bid price. The total sales of slocks to-day wore | 401,300 shares. New York, Jan. 12?Standard Oil. 4.9)04.05. NEW YuUK COTTON MARKET. n, w York, Jan. 12.?The cotton mar? ket opened llrm ui an advance of 23f6 points, but business was not active, an i hero were rumors of contemplated manipulation. During tho forenoon certain Wall street concerns and Liver? pool representatives competed it little with local siocks, but the demand was Hi.,, active ut any time and business gradually tapered off. By noon most of the Improvement hud disappeared under local liquidation in the absence of outside support; but the local con? tingent, while inclined to be a little bearish, on the apathy of outside traders, were not at all confident in view of the strong statistical situation, tin- .small movement of cotton at the ports and the fairness of holders of spot cotton in the more important markets of the South. During the afternoon the market was neglected until just before tho close, when there was a sharp rally on cov? ering. The itnal lone was steady, with prices 2 points net higher.
