Review oe the Markets; and Real Estate Business? FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks, Money, Excnauge, Bonds, Grain, Cotton, Provisions, Etc. New York, April 19.?Business on the Stock Exchange to-.clay lapsed into a condition of dullness and abandonment to the operations of small professional traders. Much angry recnimination continues to be heard on all sides con? cerning the bear raid on tiie iron and steel stocks. Not only in the ?stock market but in the iron trade as well accusations of bad faith and double dealings with the views of Chairman Gates, of the American Steel and Wire Company, but the Iron Age says in its review of the subject, "xNa sharp tumble in values Is expected unless tlvis development in the wire trade should produce such an effect." It is the reser? vation thus expressed that has so ef? fectually upset the speculative world. Dealers In securities kept one eye on the Iron and steel stocks till day, and' the erratic and Irregular movements In that group kept the whole market in a feverish and uncertain stale. When pressure there was relaxed there was a disposition manifest to mark up pnlces elsewhere, but the burden of sell lng met on the advance gave an ap? pearance of a desire to realize on an extensive scale and took the snap out of the market. On the other hand, the majority of storks offered decreased materially on a considerable decline, giving an undertone of firmness to prices. Notable strength was shown at one time by the Baltimore and Ohio stocks, and 071 the other hand Southern Pacific suffered from decided weak? ness. The one movement had about as much effect on the general list as the other. The sharp advance in the metal stocks, which followed tlie declines af? ter the opening was accompanied by a rise late In the day to the best prices. But when these stocks and Sugar gave way the whole list followed, and the closing was active and easy consider? ably below the best. Sugar, after selling up as high as ios'j, closed at a net loss of 2 points. The news of the day was generally ig? nored. II Included a number of strong statements of fa ruins-- for the second week in April, especially by soft coal carrying roads. Rumors of new com? binations of railroad systems continue prevalent. The Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville I.- now said to be des? tined for absorption by the Southern Railway, and there nre stories of v.tn dcrbllt buying "f Wnbash securities. The Southwestern group of so-called Gould railroads are formed into various combinations by the rumor mongers. The small amount of foreign proxies voted at the New York Central annual meeting was regarded as significant of the recent foreign selling of high-priced securities and explanatory Of the up? ward movement of exchange, which continued to-day. Money continues easy, and a strong bank statement on Saturday Is considered assured. The bond market was moderately active and irregular. Total sales, par value, $1,795.000. U. Local traders hes? itated to make operations on their own account owing .to the continued evi? dences of ?'one-man pwer." which have so long had a restraining influence upon speculation here. This Interest gave support to the market at times. The first call developed a quiet and steady feeling, with prices one point, lower to three points higher. There was a Blight recession, and then a rally on covering, chiefly in ropsonse to covering or more or Uss contlicting crop accounts and smaller receipts at most of the ports. There was no general speculation, and the transactions for the entire session represented a generally ?lull market. At the best level of the day the advance was three i<> seven points, while the close was quiet, one point lower to five points higher. English cables were fa? vorable, showing an Increased demand for spot cotton and an advance of two to three points In futures. ?
