On the morning of July 4ih a party of thirteen younK ladles and four gen? tlemen left the city on a largo schoon? er for a sail and fish in Chesapeake Bay. They went down under a nice breeze and wore soon In Hampton Roads. They sailed around for awhile, and some fished. About 1! o'clock they went over to Newport News and an? chored. Dinner was served on deck tinder a large awning and everybody was pleased. About 5 o'clock the party started for home. There was no wind stirring, and they drifted along; with the tide. About 7:30 o'clock they had passed Craney Island. The captain saw the storm coming and began to make prep? arations for it. Sails wcro lowered, lamps were trimmed and hoisted. The ladies were requested to go down in the cabin, which was not large enough to hold all of them. Some went in the hold of the boat. By this time they were nearing Lambert's Point. The storm broke upon them with all Its fury; their light went out. and In scud dling along they ran Into a canoe. In which there were several people. The canvas sail was caught in the schoon? er's bowsprit, and the canoe would have been turned over, but the sail Kave way and the canoe was released and an anchor was thrown overboard and the schooner lay to for more than an hour. The wind blew very heavy, the rain came down in torrents, and finally turned to hail, some of the pieces being quite large. All this time the gentlemen and the crew remained on deck. vThe ladies suffered consid? erable from the heat and fright. Final? ly the storm abated and the boat was landed about 10 o'clock at the Port Norfolk pier, and all hands took the cars for home. The boat's crew say that the storm was about the worst they have ever experienced in the har? bor. The entire river, a i. times, look? ed like it was boiling. The ladles say that they are satisfied with their expe? rience of a storm on water, and do not care to experience another. CITY TRANSFERS. Win. McK. Wood house, trustee, to Alary A. The Cripples Took n Well-Played Game from the Shipbuilders. Portsmouth swatted the ball hard in the Raine with Newport News yester? day afternoon, hitting Tlerncy for nine safe ones for a total of fifteen bases, earning four runs. Allen pitched a steady game, allowing only six hits, striking out three vnen and giving only two free passes. Although there were errors a plenty In the game. It was a well-played and Interesting con? test, and the playing of both teams deserved a much larger attendance than was present. Adams was to have umpired, but for some unexplained reason Thornton showed up in his place, and many of his decisions were very questionable. For Portsmouth, Longley. Kohnle and Murray in the outfield and Morris sey ami Bammelt in the Infield distin? guished themselves, while Murray and Byera excelled with the stick. For Newport News, Hulswitt. Conroy and Hoffman carried off the fielding honors, and Weaver and Bigbie lilt the ball hardest. Capt. Byers sent the visitors to bat first, and they started off well. Wea? ver getting a hit", but a pretty double play, from Rammert to Morrlssey to Lultlch retired him with Gates. Rapp got in a hit, but Murray look in Huls wltt's fly. Bigbie led off with a hit In the second, and Conroy sacrificed him to second, where he died, Hoffman striking out and O'Brien flying to Kohn. They scored in the third on Lultlch's error, nn out, and Kemmer's two errors. Conroy led with a hit in the fourth, but was doubled when Hoff? man hit to Morrlssey. O'Brien drew a busc on balls, but Jimmie Murray < mi in ended the innln by taking Tierney's fly. Three tallies registered for them in the fifth when Weaver led off with a double. Gates got a life on Kemmer's third error, and after Rapp filed out to BammertxHiilswitt drew a base on balls. "Blgble*S hit scored the first tvyo men, but Hulswitt was caught trying to take third on the hit. After this inning the Boers took a brace, and only three batters came up In each or the last four innings. Portsmouth scored twice in their time at bat. After Kohnle tiled out to Bigbie, Byers got a life on Blgble% error, scoring on Longley's triple. "Trapper" scored on Murray's single. Lultlch's double in the second did not add to the score, but Iben more runs tailied In the third. Byers led off with a double. Longley raised a foul fly which Rapp Captured, and Kemmer's slngl cscored Byers. Murray's triple scored "Big Bill." and Jimmie scored on Morrlssey's out. Kohnlos single in the fourth came after two were out. nail Longley's life on Rapp's error In the fifth did not count, as three flv balls followed. A quick double in the Sixth killed a chance to score. In1 the seventh the only three batters came up, but in the eighth the fire works were touched off. Kemnier reached first on Rapp's error, went to third on Murray's hit and seored when Conroy let Hulswltt's throw of Mor rissey's fielders' choice get by him. On Bnmmert's fielders' choice, Murray wiu retired at third. Morrlssey scored aim Batnmert took .third when O'Brien threw to centre field trying to calci? Baminert at second base. Lultlch drew a base on balls, but was forced by Allen, Rammert flooring. Allen stole second and scored on Bycr's sin? gle. ? The score. PORTSMOi'TH. AB. R. H. O. A. E. Kohnle, c. f.
