SHOT IN DEFENCE Charles PooleWounded at Ocean View by James O'Connor. Uoth Men Itrouglit to tho City?O'Connor In Jail - Ho Says Ho Was Aggravated Uc yond Kiidurnnco and Then Threatened With a llecr Hot Me. Charles Poole was shot at Ocenn View yesterday afternoon at ?:15 o'clock by .lames M. O'Connor. Charles Poole keeps a bar at the road house half way between the pow? er house and Ocean View. Jle was nt Ocean View, and while quarreling with O'Connor was hot. in the shoulder. He was brought to the house of friends in Brambleton ward last night to re? ceive medical attention. He was said last night not to he seriously injured. O'Connor was brought to the city by Detective Eastwood and lodged in jail. Speaking reluctantly to a reporter for the Virginian-Pilot, Mr. O'Connor said that he was busy behind the bar when Poole approached, using the vilest sort of epithets. They are un? printable, l'oole had been drinking, O'Connor said. He continued to abuse and villlfy for an hour and a half, till, O'Connor says, It had become unendurable, but the climax came when O'Connor turned to see that Poole had a bottle oi' a glass in his hand, threatening to strike O'Connor. O'Connor pulled his gun and fired twice. Then, realizing what he had done. O'Connor called to Detective East? wood, gave up his gun und asked for protection. James M. O'Connor came here from Washington several years ago. He kept a bar on Union street, near Church, and another on Talbot street. He owns the leases of both. Recently he has been attending tho bar of the pavilion at Ocean View. O'Connor is a tall, slender man, about 110 years old. with a pleasant voice and quiet demeanor. He asked the reporter the condition of the wounded man and hoped that he was not seriously hurt. He expressed profound regret at the catastrophe, and says that he did everything possible to avoid the man and withstand his fearfully abusive language. He could stand thnt till he saw Poole threatening him with the beer glass or bottle from which he had been di inking. O'Connor says that he had no pre? vious acquaintance with Poole, and that there was no reason for the abuse and Heats that he endured. O'Connor says thai he has no rela? tives here, but snys that he hopes his friends will give their sympathy and support to him.
