Mr. Huntington, who is in the city on ono of his periodical trh>s of Inspection, said yesterday that he had finally decided to build the plant, and while It would not bo the largest establishment of the kind In the coun? try, it would cost in the neighborhood of $1.000.000 und would give employment to a large force of men. A speclnl from Richmond says: "The challenge of the Newport News Elks to the Richmond Elks for a game of ball has been enthusiastically accepted by the B. P. O. E. of Richmond, and Jake Wells Is organizing a team from the Kilts here to send to Newport News. The date has not been fixed, but when they come Newport News will have n jolly crowd on her hands. The Richmond Elks feel particularly kindly to the Newport News Elks be? cause of the earnest and staunch sup? port they gave them in their fight at Atlantic City for the national conven? tion. A negro man known as "Coffee," nnd whose rightful name cannot be learned, was killed here last night by Policeman R. H. Payne. He nnd three other negroes were playing craps when sur? prised by a sergeant nnd two officers, one of whom was Payne. On the way to the station-house "Coffee" made a break for liberty. Payne started in pursuit and when the fugitive paid no heed to his orders to bait, fired threc_shots after him. ap narently without effect. Payne then rejoined the mnin party nnd went to the station-house with them. An hour later the sergeant stumbled over "Coffee's" body in a dark corner, nnd had It removed to the station. Turner and his punishment fixed at eighteen years In the penitentiary, was taken to the county court house of Isle of Wight to-day that a motion for a new trial might be made. It is reported thai a misunderstanding has arisen between Judge I). P. HlntOll, chief counsel for Qilligan, nnd his client, and. therefore, he did not accompany the prisoner to Isle of w ight.
