New York, Dec. 29.?Last night New
York showed rivpre symptoms of alarm
?.Over the rumors of itnancial diilicullies
Jti London than London itseii had done.
SRhlQ morning the New York market
ye about fifteen minute* of active
ying to overcome the- rather sharp
alines in the international stocks
iUlx haa resulted from the unsettled
.condition of allairs In London, grow
',lng out of the' announcement of actual
failures, resulting from the gamble in
West Australians and their subsequent
sfelutnp. The lower prices hero seemed
attraction' in themselves, and the
'jrressively sustained advanco in St.
on renewed reports of the entry of
Hill into an active share in the
anagement of the company and of
ttnee with other Northwestern
ads was a stimulating influence
throughout the whole 'list. Tito buying
of St. Paul itseif was on a very large
scale and the price rose to 147, leaving
the previous record price far behind.
The market sold on' a little before the
'bank statement, but renewed strength
appeared on the showing made by the
'?ank3, the expansion in loans being
lore than provided for by the increase
reserves of nearly six- million <I<>1
vrs-Which was considerable me.re than
was expected. The prinolp.il strength
3f the market was in high grade rail
i'iiad stocks. The high priced members
of the anthracite group were conspicu?
ous. The Northwestern stocks were
Suoyant. but the other grangers failed
to show much sympathy with St. Paul,
Northern Pnciflc, t'nion Pacific, Illinois
Central, Trunk Line. Wells Fargo, the
lubber stocks, National Tube und? lif?
ter early weakness, sugar and llrook
lyn -Transit were all strong features,
the advances running from - to 5
joints. These were weak spots until
he pressure of persistent profit inking
Jut firices were :> 1 >? >\ i- the early low
point, -and the realizing was well ab?
sorbed. There has been Increasing in?

The Cotton Markets.
NEW YORK COTTON MARKET.
New York, Dec. 29.?The cotton mar?
ket opened steady with prices 1 to 6
points higher, the advance being most
pronounced in near months. The pri?
mary cause for the improvement was
tear on the part of January shorts that
over holiday developments would prove
adverse to bear interests. Dispatches
to the effect that exporters were be?
coming nervous owing to the small
lines of desirable grade cotton on sale
in the South, and predictions for mate?
rially smaller receipts after the first
of the year Intensified the longing Of
near months shorts to even up. The
cables were slack, as hud been expect?
ed, foreign business small, though it
was the hull side of tire account and
helped to give the market a steady
start. Investment business was to?
tally lacking; further orders came
through from the SouOl or tire West.
The late months of the morning were
left severely alone. The December
position was entirely nominal. On the
call an export house bid for a small
lot and offered several hundred bales
at 10.10. Receipts at the ports and in?
terior were moderate.
