A ?Wir OF -UORKIXGME.V.
The labor organizations of Rornoke
made a creditable showing yesterday.
The thousand men in line, represent?
ing so many different trasles, showed
very plainly the solidity of basis of
Roanoke's claim as a large and grow?
ing industrial city. The working
men of Roanoke are its back-hone, and
sinew, and everything just and reason?
able should be done to promote their
welfare aud aid their prosperity.
The relations between the employer
aud the employe should be one of mu?
tual benefit and co-operation. Each
should have the interest of the other at
? heart, and each should work for the un?
building and success of ihe trade or vo?
cation in which he is engaged.
The workingmeu of Roanoke ?the
classes of the employed?are becoming
more aud more identified with the city.
They ar.-f owning iheir own homes, as
they should, as ownership of property
makes them much mote valuable citi?
zens, and are thoroughly interested in
good government.
Roanoke has no desire to become a
city of tenement houses, and it has uo
need to become such. Nothing cau
make it more Solid or law abiding, or
more generally progressive, than for
the classes of the employed to own
their own homes, and to feel that the\
are as much a citiz-.m of the city as is
anyone else.
COME TO SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA.
\N Leu the Territory of Oklahoma was
ii]ii'!;i'i[njitii settlement, a little mor?
than a vear ago, there" w.,s a great
rush of immigration there, especially
from Northern and Eastern Slates
Settlers traveled for miles in theii
v -gons, aud camped impatiently aim
expectantly on the border lines for
days awaiting the issuance of the Pies
i.hut's proclamation. wheu the'
should rush into the promised land an
stake Off their claims.
They dreamed of comfort and in oil
tr?te fortune near at hand.
They saw their farms filled will
grain, and their larders well stoekec
with provisions.
The'suxceeamg year, however, ha
brought anything els- but what the\
dreamed. The drought has playe<
havoc with their crops, ami great de
tilution prevails throughout the Terr,
tory.

A TELEPHONE TO THE SC A.
Edison's latest Idea is to invent an
apparatus by which storms and othe?
violent movements in the sun ma\
be heard on the enrth. In (r.ier to d<
this he is erecting telegraph poles on
each side of a great mass of iron ore at
Ogden, N. J., and ruuningaround them
several miles of insulated wire. Thf
_idea i; chat the strength of the solat
disturbances as exerted on the earll
cau be iucreased enormously by util
izing the bed of ore aud running wires
around it as he hn3 done. The two
ends of the ?nrc forming the circuit
iuto which the currents are to
thrown will be taken into Edison's ob
serration stati.'.u, and connected with
the receiving telephone, lie thus
hopes to have telephonic connection
with the suu. Stranger thiugs have
been done. Iu view ot the past, uoth
iug seems impossible for science to dis?
cover.
A NOVEL RECOMMENDATION.
The recommendation of the Missis?
sippi constitutional convention com?
mittee on elective franchise that
limited . suffrage be granted to the
.^ "votnen of that State is a novel depar?
ture for the South, and, if adopted,
will be watched with great interest;
both by the friends and enemies of
woman auftrage.
Iu the South nothing but the most
extraordinary exigency could be ex?
pected to cause such a 3lep. The
pjople of Mississippi, however, seemj
to feel that there is due necessity for
such a recommendation.
During the last year a great tide of
negro immigration has been poured
? into Mississippi. From the -deterted
farms of North Carolina, and the ripe
fields of South Carolina they have'
? come to work on the large Mississippi j
plantations. Mercenary and unscupu-!
lous agents have brought them there j
and dumped them togotber to live
like cattle iu a pen nntil Senator
fteorge estimate* that there ace 40,000
more adult negroes in the State than
there are whites.
It is J&is state of affairs that has
caused lM; elective franchise comrait
mittee to make its recommendation as
to woman's 'anfrage.
They have also recommemled as
r< quisites to voting two years' residence
in the State and one in the voting pre?
cinct; the prepayment of the po'.l tax a
year in advance aud an educational
qualification.
The recommendations of the com?
mittee have not as yet been adopted
by the convention, and it is probable
that they will not be without some
amendment. But the iact remains
that the situation anil the interest of
good government demands he.ro;c treat?
ment, end it is to he hoped ;hat the
people c: Mississippi will be ? q'ial to
tbe occasion.

The action of Senator Edmunds in
introducing a resolution providing for
an adjournment of Congress from Sep?
tember 10 to November 10 is inter?
preted to mean that those who favor it
fear being uuable to pass the election
bill during the short sessiou of Con?
gress, and want extra time between
November 10 and the first Monday in
December in order to be certain to se?
cure its enactment.
VYiieu the resolution comes up for
debate, however, the D^mojrats can be
c united upon to oppose it with all
their power, and about the only way it
can be passed will be by the Senate
changing its rules;and either procedure
is about as difficult as the other.
Only Republican partisaus aud poll
ticians want the election b?ll passed.
? It is already difficult enough to turn
one party out ofpower with its thousand
of office holders all over the country?
it matters not how corrupt it may have
become?and if all the machinery of
election was placed in its hands it
would be we:l righ impossible todoso.
The business interests of the North,
with its millions of money in Southern
enterprise- o:' development, do not
wi>h it, aud can he depended upon to
help deleat it.
The resolution ought not to pa;s.

Every year between tbe 15th of Au?
