Mm. Spencer Took Her Life With in Dose
of Morphine.
The coroner's jury in tho ease of
Clara Sponcor, who committed suicido
Tuesday night by taking morphine, mot
yesterday morning to tako the testimony
I of 11. B. Spencer, the husband of tho
I woman.
I Mr. Spencer, as related In this paper
yesterday morning, was at Salom at the
time of his wife's death, and did not
recoivo tho telegram informing him of
the fact until 1:30 Wednesday afternoon,
when he started for Roanoko afoot, as
thero was no other means available to
him.
When ho arrived, the jury had ad?
journed.
Mr. Spencer testified as follows: "My
wife and 1 came to Koanoke from Now
: borne, N. C, last June and have lived
her ever since; never believed that she
. was of unsound mind; she was very
' high tempered,and generally spoko what
j sin- thought, and she was easily paci?
fied; she has mit enjoyed good health
and often told me 1 would never see
her alive again; she was never addicted
1 to tin- use of morphine, but by medical
: advice; never made any threats to me
I about taking her life when: 1 went away
on Monday I never thought she would
commit suicide.
??When 1 returned she was in a slum?

ing morphine; but after a time she told
me that she bad taken an overdose,
promising not to take any more; after
receiving this pledge I returned to
Salem Monday night and the news of
the suicide did not reach me until yes?

cer bad taken her own life by a dose of

The remains were buried yesterday in
