pointed, tte most important of which, the Com
mittee of Overtures, consisted of Kev S M Kinp
ston, Joseph Chandler, and A Fleming, and
. Messrs Wm Sanborn and J G Slicson. There
were two elaborate discussions, and two essays
were read, one by Kev Silas Aiken. D D, on the
duties of the churches in regard to in fin t bap
tism; the other bv Rev Pliny II White, on the
Ecclesiastical History of Vermont.
The Vermont Domestic Missionary Society
LeW its anniversary on the second day of the
Convection. This" Society his employed forty
Missionaries to preach to thirtv-ciKut churches,
with which there are connected 1627 members,
S6TJ Sabbath School scbolars.and congregations
numbering more than 2,000. Nine of these
churches have received no ixMitio&e.but the oth
ers have made a net gain of 149 members. The
contributions to the treasury ot this Society
amount to 17,333, C3; all of which ha been
expended for missionary purposes, except $",
787. I' was voted to send gl.OOO of this to the
l'artnt Suciety, and employ the remainder in
opening new fields. The Society was addressed
by Rev Hay Palmer. J D, cf New York, and
Rev A 11 Clapp, Secretary of the Home Mission
ary Society. Officers were tlected as follows :
I'reesrtect, J W Hictofc. Est,., of Burlington.
Vice Presidents, Hon Wm C Kittrcdge, Hon

Corresponding Secretary, Rev Cbas S Smith,

The anniversary of the Vermont 1lueational
Society w9 held en the turns day. It appeared
that this Sjcieiy has suffered liv the neglect of
the ehurebcf. Only fifteen have contributed to
its funds and thai to the meacrre amount of
S21G,7o. It was determined to mike more vig
orous effuts in its behalf, and a resolution was
adopted, declaring the duty of the churches to
seek rut suitable candidates fcr the ministry,
and encourage them to prepare fcr the work.
The ilcm of the Society for the coming year
arc as follows :
President, lloo.Worthmgton C. Smith, of St.
Albans.
Vice Presidents, Rev. lire. Harvey 1). Kitcbcll,
nnd .1. Torrey.
Secretary, llev. II Mix of Darlington.
Treasurer, J. S. Thurston, U-ej., of Montpclier,
and fourteen Directors.
The utfairs of the Vermont churches occupied
considerable time at various stages .of the meet
ing. A resolution, cenenring the imbliiher of
the Chronicle.and declaring that paper no longer
the organ of the Congregationalists ol Vermont,
was laid upon the table. It was then voted not to
appoint the usual Committee of Conference with
the editor of the Chronicle, and thus a divorce
betwcei the paper and the 1'onvcntkra was fairly
accomplished.
It appeared from the report of the Statistical
Secretary, that there are in Vermont one hun
dred and ninety-one Congregational churches,
with an aggregate membership cf 23,571. The
aggregate are-rate attendance on public worship
is 14J07. The ncmber of pastors is seventy
six, of whom twelve have been settled within a
year. l.'ght churches have acting pastors, and
thirty-file are destitute of preaching. The
churches in Cuttingsville and at Mt Holly have
become extinct, and those in Guilford, Jamaica,
Dover, Fairfax and Shelburn, are in not much
better case. Thirty-two churches have experi
enced revivals mere or less powerful; twenty
one cf which are en the East side of the moun
tain. St Albvns was selected at the next place of
holding the Convent ion. Iter E II Byington of
Windier, was elected to pi eat h tbc opening ser
mon, and Rev Henry M Grant of West Rutland,
was cLcsen substitute.
