Tbc ilabama Clates CntroM-s Whilst as a newpaper we are obliged to give faithful report of the prevailing tone of Amer ican and British speakers and writers, concern ing the "Alabama" controversy, there is much said on both sides that we deprecate. The satis faction with which American speakers and wri te; s n gard the dilemma in which Britain has pLtjed herself in the matter of the "Alabama," is very ob ious. They are in no haste to bring the matter to a conclusion, they can afford to wait, they hae got their enemy, ae they are pleased, though most untruly, to regard Britain, ''Here upon the hip. And wdl feel Cat the ancient grudge they bear him." Unless Britain does all they choose to require, they will not arbitrate, but keep the question 1 1K-.C and be on the watch to retaliate. In a "V 1 ea j,., we could understand them; but when they are found in the admirable religious weeklies, i and in the mouths of Christain men in the States, we cannot understand them at all They seem to us the very opposite of what Chris tianity dictates. Surely it is fcr the interest of ; both nations, and of the human family that all differences between Britain and America hould be settled as soon possible, and that each should ! give in as far as it can for this bject, and neither assnme any extreme or unusual ground. Above : all it is most unseemly and unchristain to cherish al',rit of retaltion, and to proclaim tnetr willingness to do the very wrong : Uame Britain for doing; and yet .their highest and best men announce this as their policy. We fivi that we have a neht to sneak out on this subject to our American exchanges, which know that no paper either in the Britain Empire or the United States, condemned more emphatically, at the time, the course of the British Govern ment and British people with regard to the Ala bama," or showed more clearly the fatal conse quences to which it would lead ; or rebuked more frequently or severely, during the whole course of the civil war, the unchristain tone assumed towards the Union by a large portion of the Brit ish and Colonial press. Whilst miking this appeal to the Christians of the States, we must, at the same time, deprecate all vaporing, boasting or threatening on the part of the British press. Let the soft answer that turnetiiaway wrath be the cliaracteristie of this controversy on both rides. Clixtos Pbisok. A oorreepottdent, under date of May 4th, give tbe Troy Timet the fol lowing glimpse of Clinton Prison : Dannemora, in Clinton county, known as the site of (Traton prison, is situate on the side of the mountain about twenty miles West of Lake Champlain, and in one of the coldest localities in the etate.
