i grjculfural, &t. THK PA It SI AXU 1IAIH.V. By our Agricultural Editor. Fixe IIoeses. Orris Jlallanl, Kij., of Gcor pia, aell known to most of our re-tilers, for the fine horses amtyien that he bus from time to time soM in our market, has recently bought if P. Grant, ofFort C'ovingtrn, X.Y.. a pair of four jeir old Morgan horses, 13 3-4 hands high, thv are proLouneeU by gcol judges to be equal to anything of thetr age in the state- They were first priie animals in their classes at the last two exhibitions of tie Franklin County, (X.T.) Croi-s The crops throughout Sortfcrm Ver mont are in excellent condition, corn and pota toes are almost ready for hoeing and in some few instances that work is in progress. We do not hear so much complaint of worms as usual. The grass crop is unusually promising for the time of year, except on those meadows that have been hard fed on account of the scarcity of Lay arid grain. The prospects for an abundant fruit crop are flattering at present. Qntzs Caors joe Soumee Fehhsg. lYe hare so often made incidental allusion to this subject, that we hardly feel warranted in discuss ing it at length at this time; but audi is ha im portance that wecannot well let the occasion pass without saying that it is now time to consider carefully its importance and take action for the reason. The lessons of the past season ought not to 1 permitted to puss unheeded, ami yet we doubt not that there will be very many farm ers in the same uncomfortable fix again thia fall, should another drought occur. Every dairy man, especially, should put in a crop of corn or millet or something else ftr the purpose. It will pay him three times over; once in the increase of his butter and cheese, once io the improved condition of his pastures, ami once in the better condition of his animals at the opening of the fodiering season. For late fall and early winter feeding no green crop can excel in economy tha' of cabbages. Capt. John It. Moore of Concord Mes., ore of the id Oft thorough eiperiaenten in thia coun try has cultivated a Urge variety of green croj especially of millet", and it has been our inten tion to visit bin for the purpose of eliciting in fonaati n on this and other subjects in season far this ytar's cropping; but other enga-gements have thus far prcveoted and we fear wilt prevent j the visit, much to our regret. j Vsnsmir Daiar Stock am IUiky Products. Ddry stock was much reduced last fall en ac eouat of the short hay crop and is add much mare firmly this spring than ever besare. It is not so much the price that i ashed, as that there is nonefar sale, that presents tranCAerHn. Dairy products on the ether hand are compara tively low, with a fair jprospect of beeomrning lull lower. Swine, specially spring pigs, are very scarce and rule high. Hexamer's Pro.vo Hoe. During onr late visit to Xew York and vicinity we frerfuentlj saw this new implement in aaaaad always heard it spoken cf with groat approval. On our re turn one of our first acts was to get one for our own use, and we find it by far the best imple ment we have ever used for digging or moving the soil. It has six six prongs eight iaohes ton;?, each pair being drawn fn.m a single piece of steel and all keyed in a malleable inn bead m such a manner that either pair may be be re moved if desired. It is ten inches broad upon the working edge or by removing the outside pair of pr .ngs it may be reduced to six. It has ju-t the right "hang" for effective work and is on the whole oneof the lndispeawable iiiiplfiueiils i if the day, and we feel that we are doing the I public a service in calling attention te it. It j toay be ordered from any of the irapleeaent deal ers In New York, or from Messrs. We uf-ed no other t-ttiuulants in the kitchen gar den laot year, and it was never k free from wcedt. "Weed while the plants are very Muall ; the fiit weeds whkh aprar arc the Hle nourishment of the younr plant until it ha? acquired roots ; therefore, if they are de stroyed the weeds must perUh. iSeeds will not vegetate without the influ ence of moisture, air and heat ; but be care ful not to bow your pecds too deep, or they will never come up- ISetd? that how them hel.csfall upon the turfacc of the ground, and cannot (-ink even half an inch into the oil, yet they grow and flourish better than thore which are more carefully planted. The roots of ery young plants are not fctmng enough to bear removal; the best time for planting seedlings is when they have made from four to six large leaves ; tor by this time the roots are largo enough to per form their proper functions, and are not so mush injured. Plants when expoeed to the action of light transmit moisture through their leaves ; transplanted seedling or cut-tii-j should be shaded from the i-un until their roots are strong enough to supply mois ture as rapidly as it is thrown off. Roots require that air should be admitted to them , the eurfaee o! clayey soil should, therefore, be disturbed, as olten as it begins to cake. All plants absorb from the ground different clement and juices; w a constant Variation of crops is indifperiFable for a j per fect growth of any vegetable or cereal. Leaves absorb and give out moisture, and inhale and exhale air, and are consequently the most important organs of a riant, and if tbey are injured the whole plant suflers. So it ii very tenacious to strip a plant of its foliage, thmxing thereby to ripen its fruit more quickly. Branches can be pruned, but tafa great rare not to denude the leaven too xuch. The branche and leaves or plants rarely touch one anot htr w hile ins ; this liould tiach us not, to crowd ur plants too tbieUj; air and light arc as nc-esrary to theru as earth and water. The throwing off of its leaves by a newly planted cuttin?, is a sign that it has com menced to root; ontbeontrary. when leaves wither on tho stems, it sbowB us that the plant has not strength to perform its natural functions, and will probable die. When plants and shrill produce an abundance of loliage but no flowers, cither mote them to a iworer ix.il, or lift them Tram the jot or earth, and cut through some of tho principal roots. Pry ea-t winds are injurious to plants, by alisorbin the moisture irom their leene. more rapidly than they arc prepared to give it out ; weather of this kind requires to be guarded against as much as the tcrerest fret. If a grass plat is overrun with moss, man ure tho surface richly, and the gra1 will gain strength enough to drive out the intru der. All fruit trees should be kept free from moss and lichens, as they arc preTentathes to their bearing fruit. The trunks sliould be well scratied, and brushed over with a mix ture made of one callon of toft soap, one pound of Hour of sulphur, and one quart of salt well stirred togetner, ami pui uu mi a hard brurh. This mixture will destroy the eggs of all insects, and will keep the bark eino-jth and healthy. If applied to cherry trees it will have a perceptible influence up on tho fruit crop of the present year. It is an Knglili reci in much use among the Iiortieulturisu-, and is applied to all kinds of fruit trees . is teirticularlr beneficial to reach trees and we should judge it might fume a I'-eific for the yellows." For wall fruit the supports should be painted a dark color, on tho principle that brack absorb heat without reflecting it. In all eases of pruning' cut towards you. beginning a little below a bud, bet on the opposite side, and ending just above the bud ; by so doing the wood will bo kept alive to the top of the shoot. Lean shaded from the light do not ac quire de4h of color or strength of flavor; gardnere take advantage of this fact, and tie up lettuces to make them white ami mill', flavored. Plants are in their most active stat'j of growth while in bloom ; avoid transpls jiting Lbesa at this period, for in all probability they will softer from the process. On the con trary, choice thietcriod, in prftferar,ce to any other for taking cuttings, as they will strike root uinrh quicker. All garden 'oedges, cur rant and gtsiselierry Itnsbes, should be kejtt free from weds. elri when tliey run to seed, they will supply your garden with stock for the season.
