The result of the in quest attending the death of Dennis O'Brien, which occurred at St. Albans a wrtk ago in a saloon of questionable repute, deatrovs the theory that his death wis ciused by intoxication. The testimony was to the effect that O'Brien had called that evening at a cumber of places where liquor was supposed to be sold, and was refused in every instance; and that at the saloon where he died he also plead for strong drink, which was refused him. The conclusion is that be died for the want of liquor. This result of the inquest fully bears ont the -Mrirnyrr'i expectation thst it would be proved that the deceased drank nothing in Sullivan's saloon ; that he had drank nothing elsewhere during the day ;that he was a man of perfectly steady habits, an 1 that if there was any sign of rum about him he must have smelt some Good Templar's breath." It is the time for tte payment of taxes in our city, and there is an unusual amount of growling and complaint aboat them, xnd in connection there with about the genera! management of city affairs. Several rcisons conduce to the diisatis fiction, at this time While nominally no heavier than heretofore, the tar bills call for more money than ever, because they are laid upon an increased valuation cf property, which the Legis lature in i!s wisdom made higher ia this county than in any other. In proportion to actual value cf property our lists are higher ia this county by at least 25 per cent, than in the rest of the State, and we consequently pay a quarter mc-ie than cur share of State taxes. Oar city taxe3 arc also actually (though not nominally) higher bthan before ; and just at the moment when they bear heaviest, that ia when payment is demanded, and when the importance of economy in city expenditures comes home most strongly to our citizens, payment is maJj by th: city of a claim of $2,000, the justice of which had been disputed, and the existence of which had been forgotten by many. The feel ing thus excited has been incressed by the sudden resignation of the oldest and most experienced member of the City Council, Alderman and ex-Mator Wales. The democrats, al ways waiting like Mieawber for something to turn up, out of which they can make a little party capital, of course have been glad enough to seize upon these matter?, exaggerate the grounds of complaint, and howl over Republican rule in our city. The disaffected portion of the firemen, also, of coarse chime in. Certain par ties, moreover, who have bad private enmities to gratify, one of whom has had a grudge of many years standing against Judge Wales, arising, if we recollect aright, out cf certain insurance matters ; and another, who, as agent for city liquor dealers, has lost, in part through Mr, Wales' influence in tbe city government, tbe business of snpplying the City Agency with liquors, happen to stand in such relations to two democratic papers, that they find in them ready mediums for the expres sion of their hatred, and through them have poured out cn the Mayor and Aldermen, and especially on Julge Wales, torrents of scurrility and abuse, which, under ordinary circumstances, would be entirely be neath notice, and which conld have influence with decent men, only in the existing peculiar and semewhat rxcited state of mind of many citizens. Now, this, as it seems to us, is particularly a time for slopping to think ; for exercising calm judgment and common sense. And in the first puce it may be well to con sider who form cur city government. At its head is Mayor Dodge, one of onr most upright, wbolesouled, public spirited, and respected citi zens, lit had no desire to Le Mayor ; but our citizens, with surprising unanimity, called him to the post, and he is trying to perform its duties with fidelity and care. At the head of the list of Aldermen stood, till his resignation, Mr. Wales We have known him for msny years and we do cot believe Burlington has hid a mure honest citizen, or a more faithful public servant. Nor, if an unblemished character and a record marked by very unusual indications of public confidence and esteem for twenty ye&r, is cf any value, need be fear that the slanders of malicious traducere. can impair his stand ing with those whose gocd opinion he values. He doubtless reflects that most of the attacks upon him come from eouicee where blander and scurrility is made a trade, whose denunciaticn is confined to good and hon orab'e men, and whose praise is an insult and abuse is a compliment. We are sorry Mr. Wales resigned. It has pleased his enemies, and is matter of universal regret among h" frt . ! Ihe Wheeler & Wilson Sewin? Ha chine. Mfmiw, S. B. Scott $l Co., agents for the Wheel a & Wilson Sewixo Macuise. 1eak Sibs We, the underKigced Sitters cf tbe Gray Nunnery, desre to aay that we have been in constant use of large numbers of Sew in Machines for about sixteen years ; that dur ing all that time we bare been in the habit of trying the various kinds of Sewing Machines, and that after to many years of practical expe rience, which we believe enables us to decide correctly upon the merits of all, we are unhesi tating in iaytog, that we believe the Wheeler & WiUon to be, in every rtfpect, superior to any other kind. The fict that this machine has no shuttle, and still makes the lock-stitch, is one of reit importance the shuttle being a serious disaivsntageto a Sewing Machine. Tbe late improvements of the ' large pulleys" the "si lent feed" and particularly the draw fewi add very nut en illy to the value and useful ness of this machine, and we are confident that now the Wheeler & Wilwo is as nenrly fiultlees as pcfEtble. The first micbines we hal from you tixteea years since are working satisfictorily, anl though they have been in constant ae, have not cost ten cents each per annum for repairs We have tried several counterfeit Wheeler Sl Wilson re a ehi net, because they were offered at a low price, but found them bad, and were obliged to discard them From our experience we be lieve counterfeit fewiog .Machines dear at any price. We say both confiJently and conscientioucly to all who want Sewing Machines, be sure and get the gennine improved " draw feed" Wheel er & Wilson. If the price was double, they are the chejpe;t in the end. (Mgned) SitrtB J M Slocoxbr, Geo. Sapt. Grey Num. Siirm MoKTOOLrm , SlSTKE L. GlOBOIS.
