At about 10 o'clock this (Saturday) forenoon the village of Montpclier waaeuIJenly startled by the report that four men had gane over the mill dam in two beat, and that probibly all s.erc drewned. For a few minutes there was the greatest excitement men anl women run ning two and fro snJ inquiring cf occ another, 'Who arc they ?' "Have you seen my boy?" until it was announced that three cf them had been rescued, and Mr. Truman Hstt was the only one drowned. The circumitancef , as near as we can learn them, a re about as fallows: Mr. Truman Best and Fred Bancroft, ran cf Carlos Bancroft, went to the mill pond on the ttinoofki rirer for a ride in tbe new boat ahich Mr. Beat had recently pur chased. With these were Mr. II. I. Proctor, of Vinton, lows, and Osmac D. Clatk, on cf Mr. John Cjark, postmaster of Moatpelier, in an other boat. Tbe water iu the stream was very high, from the Iieavy rains of the lilt few hours, anl was running with fearful rapidity over the dam. Who out in th stream opposite to tLe boat house, which was but a few rods above the dam, the boat in which Proctor anl Clark were riding lost one of It oars, leaving them at tbe mercy of the current with but one oar. Trying to regain it they lest the other, an I were com pletely disabled They called to Mr. Best for hep, and he rowed to them as rapidly as poiei Me, ycung Bancroft who was in the boat with him clasping hands with one of those in the dis able J bot In this condition Mr. Best endeavor ed to rescue them from their peril ; but the cur rent was too rapid, and when too late to save himself, let go the other boat, both boats going over ever the dam nearly together, into the fear ful vortex below, where the waters lashed them selves upon the rock? with such force i to com pletely demolish one of the boats. Mr. Proctor and young Clark clunz to their i boat, and came cut with tt below the rocks and swam to the wall in the rear ot the old cooper's hoop, on the Berlin side of tbe river, where they were rescued with no other injury than the wetting they received Just before going over the dam, Freddy Bancroft says to Mr. Bet the two bring in the other boat together What shall we do?" Mr. Best replied : You look out for youiself, and I will for myself." It isaid that Mr. Bett was a goo4 swimmer, nd probably knew the danger of either trying to help the other". When their boat shot cut beyond the rocks belov the dam, both were cliugm; to it, and it appeared for a time that both would be saved, and when nearly opposite the gas house, Mr. Best, being then enly about twenty feet from the shore let go the boat and attempted to reach a board thrown to him from those on shore, but sank just as he was about iogMpit, and that was the last seen of him the rapid current rendering it impo-tible for any one to venture into the water no ropey were at hand. On report says that just at Mr Best let go the boat, he said to Fred Bancroft , " You cling to the boat, I am hurt and can't." The euidecneiE with which he disappeared renders it more than probable that he was hurt, else he would hare been able to have swsm to the shore. His body hal not been recovered at tbe time the mail left. Mr. Taft then spoke of tbe chsngeatlencst in principles of the Democracy and their utter sub serviency to their leader. Their two tmllbn and a half of voters, invariably followed the will and policy of a conclave at Washington or New York, and now they weie going into thecinvass with out a platform or a candilate, when six months ago they would call jou in the philosopher's own linguige, " a liar and a villain " if you intim ated they would yet vote for Gree'ey. If the demoensy could have elected II en J ricks. Han cock or Hoffman they would not have nominated Greeley. Tney took him up because through him, they saw the only way successfully to reach the White House. Tbe etfect of Mr. Greele;s election would be the reiteration cf the Democracy to power; and what thi" would be, was best shown in the columns of theTViot. i'se!f, and in Mr. Sumner's j speeches during the last tw. ear TV -peaker j here ttii ap ju tat ns frjm (i: cc t an I im nr, wh'cn shwcJ tbat a Ua. j-at tr.uriS ' w j J be allowing tne e i.s to Iirec 'ti' p , vi the nati n Mr Taft hal n fjarc mat '-It S tamer's let er w. u' I atlect Lv t - I e That wt u. 1 (-.' solid fur the Kepi! Chittenden County, he was happy to say, was the cleanest county in tbe S.ate. Tbe Burlington Liberal Republicans wore al mctt all sorebra l. Among them were two ex aisessors and an cx-collector of internal reven ue. Most of tbem made more trouble in the party than they would cut of it. Ju lge Xoyes was only a few tears ago tbe democratic candidate for Mayor of Durlington Mr. Catlin, from Texas, was the Democratic canitdate for representative in '06, and Mr. Rclfe.the President cf theUrreley and Rrown club.wbo waia "Hberar because he could' nt run politics in Vermont a they did in New Hampjhire.was a Johcsan man in If-fift The late Jeremiah FtvDch uscil to call Mr. Roberts, Valiant Daniel, "and he thought it ought to take as "valiant " a man as waa the prophei Daniel, when he went into the lions den, to go into a Democratic meeting and make a Democtatic speech as .Mr. Robertj did the other evening. Mr. Taft's speech was frequency applauded. After the " Star Spangle-J Banner " from the yueen City Rand, Mr. Weed ancouoced that he hvl receiveil the following letter from Henry I Clark, Esq , of Rutland, regretting Irs inability to be present RtTTLASD, Aug. ti, lb72 II. N. Xewllc, Rti , .My Dear Sir .- I regret that I am compelled to I e absent from your meeting, at Shelburn, j this evening. Uafrrrccn circumstances make it necessary for me to remain at borne to give at tention to political matters iu this county. I am sure however of the success of your meet eg, in the pretence cf our mutual friends Col Charles II. Joyce ani Russell S. Taft, who can speak to you far more efiectitely than myself. It ia gratifying to know that Republicans cf Vermont ate discussing tbe issues of the present political campaign with an earnest zeal, that be speaks tbe old fashion majorities at the Septem ber election. The cauva'a is a spirited one, full of strange doctrines, ani unexpected defection but the integrity of the great Republican party still remains intact, and will be an abiding faith in is principles tbe success of its aJmmistra tion and its standard bearers it will march cn to victory in November next. Wishing yoa crest success in yonr meeting this evening and hoping for a large majority for Grant and Wilson in your town. I am as ever truly yours, HajiRT Cube. Col. Charles II. Jujcc Via then introduced and made a most eloquent and elTectite speech, of which we regret we have Lut space for a brief synopsis. CCL. JOTCfc's SPUlCII. The Culonel commenced by saying that this was tbe only real lire meeting, he had adlrtss ed this campaign ; but the quiet that had generally prevailed at the political meetings, he had attended, he had attributed to the fact that the jeople of Vermont wers not ac customed to a canvass like the present oxie. There has not been such a one since ls40. He then spoke of the importance of this canvasa and gave a succinct history of the two political pr- law, ret-caling the Missouri compromise, oppos ing free California, and paving tbe way for the arbitrament by arms tbe Democratic party had brought on the war, and then ly their acts and vote s and voices; by re sisting supplies and resisting drafts by riots and blwod-abed, aod all other possible means they had striven to aid the traitors of the South against the freemen, and sotdicrsand Union men of tbe North. They organized treason; they de fenJed treason ani slavery against the votes and Uses and victories of the freemen of the Repub lican States, and if they hal ever done anything to make treason odious it was by putting the stain of Tammany Hall's approval upon it, which could but be odious to God and man. The Republican party, on the other hand, hal npheld the Sag of our country, hal abolished slavery, and enabled 4,000,000 of emancipated freemen to stand with their riven chains in one hand and their title to liberty in tbe other and chant praises to tbe God of their creation for the persistent labor and heroism cf the party and principles of republicanism. It hal raised armies, equipped navies and fought a successful war against three thousand millions of property; against seven generations of enemies, and had enable! its martyred leader, by a single stroke cf his pen to strike every mark cf the bonlmau from his liberated soi!. It has prevented repudiation; carried for ward gigantic commercial enterprises, etc, etc., giving a list cf achievements in peace, equal to its triumphs in war It was impossible for any Presllent to carry on an administration without r-ccasional mistakes; and we should not for such a reason turn back gu the only party that has preserved cur coun try and saved oar liberties, Lat us cling to oar organization as we have clung to it before. These times tried mcns soul. Let us seek to correct the errors but give up personal piques and unite ia the support of the Kepubliim party and its nominations and thus rchiere a gtoruua vie- j tory. j Against the eombineJ poeercf the Democratic party, and in spite of An Ires Johnson, the South hal been reconstructed, anl the breeze kissed the star spangled banner mevery Htate of the Union from ocean to ocean. Th.s was the fruit cf Grant's administration. There never was a finer to-Iy of men thaa tho Philadelphia Contention, which gave Gen eral Grant a unanimous reaominatioa. It wan corjpond ef the brai., muic'e, integrity and honesty of the country. Less than thirty of the holy were office hol lers. Tbe politicians certainly did not nominate Gen. Grant. The whole spirit of this Greeley movement was false hood Base, cowardly lies, was its stock in tra i The doctrine of State rights wa imbed ded i be Cincinnati platform, anl in Greeley's two liters of acceptance. The speaker then gave an ascount of just how the bumner-Grecley against Grant quarrel com menced and culminated, and how the soreheal party, joining with the old democracy wanted an eiperitnced circus rider, who woull straJJle all the hnriei at ouce, and fjunl Greeley, by expe rience anl practice to be just tbe manifold rider they rar.at have. He eloquently compared, the lives and public ajta of Grant and Greeley, and ' ahowei conciusivtlv hich cf the two the nation . oouw auora to truir. .Since tbe SiTiour never hJ a man Ueo so vilified as Gea Grant Co! Joyce thought the country would have Uen better oil if we hJ hal a little less forrtv- policy toward the reM. It would have been better if Jeil Davis and a n-imber cfthe rebel leaders ha i dissraced a zibbet with their twdus. He then sarcastically described the lit- ue presume fqua t or Ifpublicans, the lost sheep of the Hjose of Israel, who have gone af ter ttraoep god and the Ush pots of office and power. He did not believe they would bare anyplace in Geeleys adimniitratiou, if he should be electeJ. He next case an tlo.iucnt defence of Gen. Grant, sketching graphically his career, which was received by the audience with the utmost csth-jsia-tn. Oen Grant hal organised victory be said, anl this would im laortshie him forever. He wa a great states man as well as a great soldier. He hal kept hi pledges since he became President. He hal grappled the financial question an j reduced tbe nat'unal debt ; aod kept the countty n a healthy and safe business condition. Fourteen investigation! ha 1 been ioititutel against the President and his cabinet, and the result was there was not a stain or blot on their fame He would not vote for Horase Greeley becaise he wss not fit for tbe Presidency. Tbe company he kept would contaminate the very j elect. He reviewed Sumner's initotoent cf the i Presideocv in a masterly manner, and exploded the lies of Grant's defiuaer oocccinuig gift taking and nepotism.
