THE BUELINGTON. VT., FREE PRESS. FRIDAY MOBNINg. MAY 12, 1876. I BURLINGTON, FRIDAY, MAY 12. 1S76. U. U. BENEDICT, Editor. TermsSa.OO a year, al wari In adrancc. A Trial orlloitsE-FLiyn. It is said that a couple of New York spotting men hare made a bet of fifty thousand dollars on time against twenty-fiv; thousand dollars, on the ability of thirty-fcix native California horses to maintain a Fpeed of twenty-fire miles an hour, and bv thirty-six relays to run OTer the country road from New York to Buflalo and back, f-ay nine hundred miles, in thirty six hour?. The thirty-six horses selected ar rived in New York, a week ago, and the grand trial is soon to be made. Eighmcy, the condemned Canandaigua mcrdcrer. was born on Friday, murdered Crandall on Friday, was sentenced on Fri day, and was hung on Friday. Friday proves to be an unlucky day for him. George F. Davis, of A"cutneyville, Wind sor county, lias entered his bora, Robert Fulton, in the Centennial races, at Phila delphia, in the class that has never beaten 2.40. A. II. Danforth. of Rutland, is to drive Fulton in this race. There is promise of a pretty good repre sentation of the Vermont militia, at Phila delphia, without expense to the State. The Ransom Guard, of St. Albans, tho E-tcy Guard', of Urattlcboro, the Park Guard of Bennington, and the Northficld Company, arc making their arrangements to go. Aud it would not he the most surprising thing in the world if our Burlington Company, under its new organization and as ably oXi-errd as it now is, should put itself in a condition of drill to make a good appear ance anywhere, and should conclude to join the dress parade at the Centennial. Uiiw is Tan? The Philadelphia corres pondent of the Rutland Globe, speaking of the Vermont Headquarters building, says "There are many interesting revelation" concerning the Vermont building and the manoouverrjgsherc. It contains many epis odes that Vermunters ought to know before they contribute largo amount to support what secrus t lookers-on as a strangely managed affair for a State institution." II Mr. Sprague h fitting up that gothic cot- tago with " epi&odes," of course tho Ver munters ought to know it. Let us line the revelation", anyhow. "Not ar IIoux." A Whitehall lady was sitting at her 5-ewing, one day last week. when she observed approaching the bous: neighbor w bom she did not care to see. She quickly dropped her work and stepped into a closet, so as "to be not at home" to her caller. The closet door closed with a spring. Four hours later her husband returned home al supper time. and, having occasion to look into the closet, discovered his wifo ly ing insensible on the floor. The air revived her, and she is now clear that it would have been on tho whole lean trying to have seen her talkative neighbor. laAMI-LOCKID tlLUJN J'tlNTED IX THE Wiooski River. By an unlucky occurrence, the Winooski river received a quantity of land-locked salmon, Friday. Fish Com missioner M. C. Edmunds started, Friday a. m., on the train leaving Rutland at 1 35, with a quantity of these b, intended for parties in the northeast part of the State Soon alter leaving, Mr. Edmunds discovered that tho fih were ailing, and in spite ol all bis effort? nearly one-third of them had died before reaching this city. Thinking it bet ter to save a portion of them than to n-k the loss of all, he determined to plant them in tho fits: water ho should reach, and ac cordingly be stopped at the Lime Kilns, and deposited them in the Winooski. Mr. Edmunds changed the water in the can- containing tne fish, just before starting, and thinks the fish wero poisoned by some deleterious Fub-tance in the fresh water given them. St. ALt!iM Tuk Weeks Fire. Sheriff Morrill, of St. .Allans has rcceircd a letter from tli o sheriff of Orleans county, giving a minute description of tho Italian tramp. who is b-ipposcd to bare fired Mrs. Week-' buildinisand taying that he wadischargcd from Irasburjh jail on the 17th of April, alter a fire-months' incarceration, for burn- in--; a building. This strengthens the f a picion tnat the tramp wet the liro on pur pose, instead of accidcrtally. as lias been mrmied. The Managers of Eellcfue Trotting Park intend holding their first course of racch about July 4th. In the Franklin county court, Thursday Judge Itoyee sentenced Hiram II. Bliss, the clothes line thief, to two years in the State prison. Swastox MAimom Hen. Prof. Geo. R. Choate killed one of Lis full-blood dark lirahmi bens the other day, which weigh ed 10J pounds when dressed and ready for cooking. "as Ir a Shower or Frog? In thetjn ot Coventry, tho other day, a roid wa nhovcled through snow Irom four to sil feet deep a di&tancd of 40 rods, and, the ncit morning, tho road was strewn with frogs and lizards, there probably being two basli- els at least. It is a mystery where they came trom. One theory is that a nest where they were wintering was stirred up. Some, however, think thero was a shower ol fros the night betore, as it rained quite beaviiy. If the iormer theory is correct, the reptile mut have been wintering in the s-now. the workmen did not i-liovel in any place to within a foot of the earth. The occurrence pre-cnts a question for the curious to solve. A Moral for Landlords. Recently urnn was hanged in Canada for killing his landlord, and ho "pointed the moral" of the occa-ion by expressing the hope that fio cireum-tances which brought him there "might pruvo a warning to other land lords who in-i-ted upon dunning their poor tenants." Luh- Nati-rx Sicrling is boasting over a hvc-lrgjed cair, tho property of F. H Parker. The re-appointment of General William tv ebs as Collector of Customs was so much a matter ol course that it has hardly excited remark. It may bo a good time, however, to say that the Custom Houso is in clean and honest bands; that there is no "Custom House dictation" in politics, in this State, ana that Oen H clls'a retention of tho Col- lectotship will be generally satisfactory. v. . It is the portable field pulpit used by the Ret. George Whittfield in open air meetings, 125 years ago. It is a curious, old-fashioned contrivance made of pine wood, and is so constructed that it can be readily set up or taken down. Whitefield preached over two thousand sermons from this pulpit in tho open fields of hngland, Wales and America, lie took it with him wherever he went, and he once remarked that the Word of God had from time to time been proclaimed from that pulpit to over ten millions of people. The temperance meeting at City Hall.Sun- my night, was attended by a largo audience and a goodly degree of interest was mani fested. Short addresses were made by mem- bcrs of tho Reformed Men's Club and others and at the close of tho meeting a numberof siffnatures were added to the pledge. Ine next Sunday evening meeting will be ad- dressed by Mr. Taintor, -( t:il.nil Mn. who is highly spoken of as an eloquent and elective temperance orator. The Reformed Men's Club meets every Wednesday even ins at Renublican headquarters, Peck's Block, Main street. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children have taken tho great showman. P. T. Barnum, in hand. The President of the Society has entered a complaint that a boy called '"Tommy" is compelled to ex ecute dangerous feats in Birnum's .how, and Barnum hasbcen ordered to discontinue the tioyV performance. Mr. Barnum acquiesced for the present, but it is thought that the matter will bo contested in tho courts. The annual meeting of the Society of the Potomac w ill be held in Philadclphia.on the 0 h of June next. Governor Peck, it is understood, has ac cented tho offers of the Ransom and Estey Guards to act as an escort to tho Centennial Exposition. The companies will probably leaie for Philadelphia some time in thclat- tcr part of June, and will be absent about a fortnight. The season mu-t bo set down as rafhtr bttkward. The farmers hereabout com plain that the gra-s starts very slowly, and that their work is not as well ahead as last year at this time. Smith Wright, ot Williston.has the repu tation of having tho largest poultry yard in the United States. He has 3,400 geese, 000 ducks and nearly 500 turkeys in his yard. consuming forty bu-hela of corn daily. Poisonocs Canned Meat. Tho health authorities of both Boston and New York, have recently received complaints that per sons in numerous instance-, have been made sick from eating ready cooked canned corn b.-tf, an article of food which is getting to be quite common. No deaths from eating tho unwholesome meat have occurred so far as reported, but cases havo come to notice where prompt medical attention was neces sary to relievo the patients from suffering. The symptoms of the sickness produced bj eating the meat are vomiting and cramps. It is thought that tho meat was rendered unwholf-oaie by boiling in copper and brass kettles, and from tho u-o of too much salt petre. The Wars or Tint Would. " If thii ere but an honest world," said one, speak inz from rather dear experience, " there'd he some fun in living. Six months ago," he continued, " I left a good salaried position and went into business for myself. Since then I have had $200 worth of goods stolen from me, taken $110 in counterfeit money, and have $700 tru-ted out, half of it among parties who probably never can pay, and the others seem to be in no hurry about it. I think I'll resign." Cisdunu mi Earth iXaEiouTY Dats. Pbileas Fogg's imaginary trip is to bo ri valled, it s-eeins, by one undertaken by a party of newspaper men. A number ol 1 adin news-papers, including the New Vurk Herald and Twin, Harper's Wetkly and frank lshe's Illustrated, have organ- utd an expedition lor the purposo of en- Humpi in; the earth in eighty days. The Lundon Times has joined the enterprise and will -end Dr. l!us-cIl,known as "Hull Run' Russell, and an arti-t connected with the Illustrated JS'ncs will al.-o accompany the eipedition. The expedition will leave New York about June 1, in a special train lor San Francisco, which is advertised to go through to that city in eighty hours. This fa-t train will travel to Chicago over the Penns lvania line, from whence it will go forward to Omaha by special engines. The excur-ioni-ts will remain in Chicago no longer than is necessary to transfer the irain to the track of the Northwestern road. At San Francisco the newspaper party will take a steamer to Yokohama, and thence they will proceed to Calcutta, Cairo, and through the Mediterranean to France. They 11 proceed to Qaeentown and embark for New York. St tcioE at Urandox. There is a ready market for goods and tho foreign trade is becoming very lucrative. An Interesting Rohance or thk War. D. K. Collins of Charleston, N. C.who belonged to tho rebel army during the war. and once ?ame into very close quarters with a Vermont boy of about his own age (20 years), is trying to find where be is and to renew bis acquaintance with him. It was ju-t after the battle of Strasburg, when the rebels were retreating up the Shenandoah with the federals in hot pursits, that they met. Tho boy in blue was mounted on a magnificent bay borse.witb two revolvers by his side, and was otherwise highly equip ped ; tho one in gray bad an r.nbeld nue and a lot of traps that he had picked up on the field of battle, and was moving np the valley as last as be could, when he was or dered to halt by the boy in blue, who came up in bis rear at lull speed. Ihe boy in gray halted and about-faced with gun at a charge-bayonet. Tho boy in blue snapped his revolver. and then dashed directly at the boy iu gray, who allowed him to come in easy range, then raised his gun and emptied . i . . : . t. The boy in gray wheeled himself about and ran for his gun, which lay a lew steps away, but down came the boy in blue on his back, ibe boy in gray camo np with the load on his back, and then gave the Doy in blue sundry blows with bis gun, when a soldier on horseback, dressed in blue came in and decided the contest, and be would have ended the earthly career of tne boy in gray, bad it not been for tbe timely pleading of the boy in blue, who bade bim not to shoot. The soldier on horseback, a New Y'orker, tben made the boy in gray a prisoner. baTing robbed bim of a watch. The boy in gray now wants both his antagonists to commnnicato with bim, and wishes the Vermont boy to have tne watch. ix. As any survivor or witness of such Frees.
