Mr. Kichardnon ra:n: to our eity nearly ten years ago, and had ever since held the iosi tion of invoice clerk with the firm of Wells, Hichardson A; Cj. His faithfulness and courtesy ctidcaretJ him to every one with ! whom he was thrown in contact, and few ! young men of hi ac w mid Ie o greatly j missed, or so widely mourned. Of a some what retiring disposition, he never put him self forward, but whatever duty he had to perform was done faithfully and well, lie was especially prominent in the Sherman Military band, of which he had been treas urer since its organization. It is not too much to say that very much of its success was owing to his effective management, and his careful avoidance of auv cause for unfa vorable criticism from without. The mem bers of the band will feci his loss keenly, for their regard for him was much more than mere friendship. His remains were taken to his old home at Lisbon, N. H., by the train leaving at 10.05 Monday morning. A short funeral service was held at the house of his brother, Mr. A. E. Richardson, Union street, at 9 o'clock. His sorrowing parents and friends have the sincere sympathy of all, and his memory will long be cherished. VESXOitmust have lost what few adhe rents he had hereabout by his unfulfilled prediction relative to a severe snow storm on December 22. He prognosticates as fo1 lows, for January : I anticipate that Xew Year callers will have heavy sleighing this year from Mon treal to Washington, 1). C, and that a cold snap during the first quartet of this mouth will preserve it for that period. I expect blockades of snow in the United States the 7th and Slh or January, and rainy days dur ing the month w ill be exceedingly few. The second quarter will open with heavy snow falls, and terminate in a cold snap. The middle of the month will bring suowfalls which will terminate in milder weather toward the cud of the third quarter. This thaw, which will be interrupted by a brief cold spell, will extend from about the ltith of the month into February. The record of this month will show it will have been a severe one, and the general conditions of the weather will probably remind us of some of what are called "real old-fashioned winters." As Chbistxias came on Saturday, this 3'ear, some readers may not object to know what was said on the matter by our wise an cestors. Here is what was said by one an ccstor, name unknown. The New York correspondent of a West ern paper states positively, from information gained irom intimate menus oi judge Hilton, that the late A. T. Stewart's body has never lecn recovered. The thieves who Mole it relied on a woman s weakness to redeem the t tones at u co-tly price. I'ut M rs. Stewart's friendi appealed to her that if sh e purchased those poor Ihhics no man would lie safe in his crave: that they were not necessary to the reiiose of her husand'a soul, and that if he could appear to her in spirit he would tell her never to give one cent to keep alive such an example. Ib-nce the grave robbers had their work anil subsequent expense and lon waiting on a reward for nothing. Judge Hilton -.aid to the correspondent . 'I would probably tell you if I had anv thins to say. but the newspaper discussion of the subject is mainly designed to assist the thieves and extort money from Mrs. Stewart. When the subject dies out, and the wounds of ihe hour are heaieu, it may he tune to taitc up that question." Tiik Iton Jft-rttlit preaches a little ser mon from the text "IIow people love to be fooled. Itfiys: 3Iilliondof men and women who call themselres intelligent, are more in terested to-day in what any unknown and irresponsible terson, like the allcireu Jlr. Vennor, have to say about the weather, than in the predict tous sent out from Washington, bated as they are upon the latest information from all sections "of the country, and ani mated by no personal motives. If any igno ramus should predict that the Old South steeple would turn into a volcano and emit a tlootl of lava next Sunday, he would find be lievers. And no lietter information could convince them to the contrary. A IlEMAr.KAELE Cak is that heretofore mcntlonetl in our columns in which the town of Rradfonl, appears as defendant and Ira Ielendy as plaintiff. The plaintiff thims that while driving along one of the highways in the town of Bradford at an early hour in the morning, his wagon came into collision with a stump which had lid down upon the road during the night, and his horse ran away, lie was thrown out anil w as struck cn the back by a portion of the wagon, sustaining injuries which, he claims, result eel in the partial paralysis of his lower extremities, for which he sues the town for 520,000 elamages. Three trials have already been had, in the first two of which the jury disagreed, but at the last trial a verdict of SG,e"C0.Ce was rendered for the plaintiff. This was set aside, however, by the Supreme Court and now for the fourth time the op posing counsel have arranged their forces in tiattle array The tlefence is First, a gen eral l.ut:il ; secondly, sutlicicncy of the high way, ami thirdly feigned paralysis. There was room enough it is claimed for the plain till to hive avoided the stump and if he was injured in the manner described it was through his own negligence and not because of any fault of the town. Kegarding the paralysis, it is allegeel that Mr. ilelendy is a pretender, and a score of prominent physi cians are w itnesses on this point. 1 he plain tiff permits the physicians to stick pms in hit legs their entire length and also to make many other tests with the view of demon strating the fact that he has no feeling in the parts said to be affected. He exhibits no emotion when these tests are applied, and so far has bntlled the medical experts of the de- tense. The latter tlesiretl at the last trial to apply the other test, which is said to be in- I nil 1 1 de, nml which consists in placing the . patient en a table and mlministering ether. ' When partly under the intluence of the ! drug some one shouts in his ear j that he is falling, and if he is i feigning he makes an involuntary effort t to save himself. If, en the contrary, i he is really suffering from the complaint' nan it'll, no movement of the boely is discern-1 able?. Jle-leudy refuse-d to permit this test to j be made, nn the ground that it might endan ger his lile, but evielence was subset pieut.y adduced showing that the plaintiff's physi cians had applied the test private ly nnd tliat no movement of his limits was detected. The eh fe-ud.uit submitted a niiinUr of report- ( til case's if feigned paralysis, all showing that a pi rsn of gre-at endurance aud imloin- i I able will muld undergo every test that had t U-en m idt in Ibis case eveept the other test.
