TheRiip to be filled is about. "0 miles in length, extending from tho terminus of the Boston, lloosac Ttm nell and Western at Rotterdam Junction to Utic.i. It is stated that the St. Johnsbury and Luke Cnaniihiin rond is controlled by the Boston and Lowell and will pass into the hands of the Boston and Maine April 1, when the lease ot the Lowell takes effect." There uppear.s to be no doubt that the Uoston and Lowell road has been leased to the Hotuu and Maine for 0!l years, at 7 per cent for 10 years and 8 per cent there after. The directors of both roads have agreed to those terms and there is no reason to suppose that the stockholders will not acquiesce in a profitable bargain. Vv A. COL.. A. I' WAI.KUIC. tils Kiiilorseiiieiit for Inter-Stato Com merce Commissioner. A special despatch to the Boston Jour HiI from Rutland says: Colonel Aldnce F. Walker leaves for Washington the first of this week to assume the duties of the ollice to which he has been nppointed. Col. Walker has been busily eugaged this week in closing up his extensive law busi ness and in settling his private affairs, preparatory to taking up his residence at the capital. The selection ot Col Walker as one of the commissioners gives universal satisfaction in Vermont. Gov.Ormsbeesays that Col Walker is thoroughly equipped for the duties of the position, aud that in his opinion he will prove to be one of the ablest and most pagacious members of tho board. The Supremo Court- judges nnd such leading members of the Vermont bar as Judge- Poland, Hon. B. V. Filleld ot Montpelier, District Attorney Kittredge Ilaskins. Hon. John L. Phelps, our minister to Eng land, warmlv indorsed Col. Walker for the place. Minister Phelps wrote to Col. "Wnlner that he had persistently refused to i i-cumim-nil any person to the president for appointment since he had been abroad, but that, on account of Col. Walker's high character and ability, and because of Ids belief that Walker would make a valuable member of the commission, he should make an exception to this rule and recom mend him for the place. Col. B. B. Suialley of Burlington, secretary of the democratic nutioual.committee, said that if a republican had to bo appointed from New England, Walker was as good a man as could bo found for the place. It is understood that Senator Edmunds wrote a letter to Mr. Walker expressing his wish that ho might bo appointed on the board. This letter was sent to the presi dent with other papers. Siortly before the appointments were announced Presi dent Cleveland sent for Senator Edmunds to come to the White House to confer witli him regarding tho selection of Col.
