Mrs. Green Is Now 74 Hetty Green reputed to be the rich est woman in the world, took a day off yesterday, just like an ordinary person. The occasion was Mrs. Green's seventy-fourth anniversary of her birthday. At Mrs. Green's office, in the Chemical National Bank, a clerk said: "Mrs. Green has not been here to day. I guess she is celebrating her birthday." When a World reporter called at her new apartment in Hoboken a timid maid asked through the door who was calling. She was told and said: "Neicher Mrs. Green nor Miss Green is at home. No I cannot open the door to speak to you. Mrs. Green has strictly forbidden me to open the door to anyone. I w'ould lose my job if I did. I think Mrs. Green has gone to the country." Mrs. Green's household consists of her daughter, a maid and her dog. Inquiry at No. 1309 Bloomfield street Hoboken, revealed the fact that Mrs. Creen was living there, although the name on the door is "C. Norton." "That's Mrs. Green's name over here, " said a tenant. "Go right up to the third floor, and you will find her apartment. She is living in style. She has one of the most expensive flats in the building. She pays $45 a month for six rooms. When she lived over on Washington' street she only paid $22. Why she is getting extravagant. Next thing she will be having an automobile, "When she moved in she bought a lot of new things, rugs and curtains, and rocking chairs. The rocking chairs all looked alike. They had red plush cushions on them. I never saw so many. There must have been two doz en. It looks as though she intended to take it easy from now on. She never invites any of us in, and, of course, we couldn't call unless we were asked. Yes, Mrs. Green is spending money on her flat. But not on clothes. She wears the same old-fashioned black dress. But, gracious me, now that she has begun to spend money, who can tell what she will do? She may buy one of those, what do you call them, Directory gowns, yet." The shopkeepers ar, indifferent to Mrs. Green's return to Hoboken. They say she is a very light purchaser. New Homestead Ruling It is reported that a new ruling from the general land office will go into ef fect January, 1909, that will make things rather unpleasant for a great number of girls who are holding down claims. Under former rulings postmasters and their clerks, state and county officers and their deputies could prove up on land without living on same, providing they had establish ed residence before the appointment. So many of the girls and women are taking advantage of these pro ---.- I-----~- I i------ I i---i An Opportunity to Get Human Life And The Monitor, Both for $2.00 You may have this fin; Magazine mailed to ______r_ ,_ , your home for '--,k one year and The Monitor Both For Only Edh by ALFRED HENRY LEWIS $2.00 tAbLO OF CONTENTS for Ma, 1908 THE .WORLD'S GREATEST HEROINE-MOTHER . .................................... .....Maelt S. The Socialists predicted that they would poll more than a million votes; they actually received little more than half that number. The increase is about 133,000 over their 400,000 votes of 1904. The reasons for this small vote are not difficult to find. Socialism has not yet made a deep impression among Americans by birth. It has no at tractions for the great mass of far mers, while to the skillful mechanic its doctrines seem like an effort to take away his opportunities to attain material success. Every intelligent American workman feels that he may become . Carnegie, a Rockefeller, a Schwab, or at least that his sons may. Again, the doctrines taught by the Roman Catholic Church make it diffi cult for its adherents to embrace socialistic teachings; and there is a vast host of Roman Catholic voters in America. Socialism in the soil of America is an exotic. Aside from a few dilettanti and doctrinaires, highly estimable but extremely impractical gentlemen, most of the Socialists are foreigners who have not yet learned the essential principles of American freedom. But this is not to say that the American people can afford to be in different to the Socialist movement. "Lieutenant and the Cowboy" "The Lieutenant and the Cowboy, " the new western military drama, which comes to Glendive Opera House on Sunday, December 6th, should not be confounded with the ordinary clap-trap melodrama, for this is a play of ster ling worth and is presented by an ex tremely capable company. No better play can possibly be offered Glendive theater-goers this season, for the sim r> ý?:::}ý' " fir ' c.ýR" jrti .. pie reason that nothing superior has been written. "The Lieutenant and the Cowboy" is a tense, heart-thrill ing drama of the west. It combines the elements of both tragedy and comedy, but so sanely blended after the complete story clings in one's mind long after the performers are forgotten. It is by no means a "gun" play, but two shots being fired during tho four acts, and neither of them in view of the audience. It is, on the contrary, a strictly high-grade pro duction, well worth the attention of our most critical theater-goers.
