Inter mountain: Who will be gover
nor, is now the uppermost question in
3ontana. It doesn't make much differ
ence. It will not be a carpet-bagger.
There is plenty of good material, but we
have heard of no candidates. However,
while such men as Sanders, Irvin, Hersh
eld, Mantle, McCutcheon, Mills, Wade,
lake, White, Warren, Tom Power and
thers equally well known are within
reach, it will not be necessary for Pres
dent Harrison to go across the Mason
ad Dixon line for a suitable appointee.
The Helena Record very unkindly
peaks of Mr. Jerry Collins as one "who
been on all sides of the political fence
Northern Montana, and finalty settled
ow as a democrat." We protest, Jerry
never been on more than Two sides
ate tence at the same time and it is
kind to say that he has been on the 1
andwest, north and south sides, on
p and unader the fence at ONE time. We
bjeet to this exaggeration of a man's
flings.
A Republican senator will be
hosen in Delaware in place of Sauls- 1
ury. Another one will be chosen t
West Virginia. This will make
e number of Republican senators
t least 40, and not over 36 demo
ratic senators. Of all the terri
oies, only Arizona, New
exico and Utah elect democratic t
elegate this year.
C. C. Ray has sued the Tribune for
000. for libel.
We believe the esteemed secretary of
e Press Association was strongly op
od last June to the use of personall
Sin journalism. We fear our highly
eemed friend will be still more strongly
lposed after court.
General Warren, the chief of po
ce in London has resigned on ac
oat of the strctures made upon
e police for not obtaining a clue
the White Chapel murders.
Thomas Jones and Mary Winters, both
sideats of this city, left last evening
r Helena, where they will be married.
eey will return this evening and give a
eption at their home on 7th. avenue
11th.

Carnegie on the Solid South.
NEW YORKn, Nov. 1u.-Andrew C'arne
gie was asked: "What do you think will
be the consequence of this election?"
"We can now," replied Carnegie, "look
forward to our business with great con
fidence. No violent change in the policy
of the country, which might affect its in
terests closely need he feared. The pres
ent tariff system will be revised by the
new administration with a view to giving
the manufacturers greater control of the
American manufactures. The gain in
Missouri of republican congressmen and
in Alabama and especially the change in
West Verginia, is the beginning of the
end of sectionalism. We can in the fu
ture have protectionists from the south
and north and free traders from the north
and south. Thus we shall again he one
people no longer divided by sectional is
sues. It has settled two facts, that Am
erica is for Americans and that Amer
icans are one people."
Chickasaws on the War Path.
ST. Louis, Nov. 15.-The latest news
from the Chickasaw Indian nation is of a
startling character. Governor Guy was
not killed Saturday night as reported yes
terday. The would be assassin's bullet
failed to hit him. This attempt to take
the governor's life so aroused his friends
that over 300 of them, heavily armed,
gathered at Tishmingo to protect him
and Byrd with 200 well armed men also
gathered and went into camp. Auditor
Harris and a few other Indians were at
Gainsville preparing for the fray, which
they say will come off tonight. Guy has
ordered his men to surround the Byrd
party and exterminate them unless they
surrender without resistance. These men
left at noon for Tishmingo to join Guy's
forces, who they say will number 700.
Unless the United States government in
terferes it will be a war of extermination.
The Whole Northwest in Glorification.
ST. PAUL, NOV. 1.--The victory of the
republican national ticket was celebrated
in a hundred cities and towns of Minne
sota and Dakota, torchlight processions,
fireworks and lighly wrought oratory
being the features. In Dakota especially
the enthusiasm knows no bounds, as the
election of General Harrison is under
stoodto mean the admission of North and
South Dakota with little delay. Minne
apolis celebrated Saturday night with
10,000 people in line. St. Paul had a
grand commemoration last night to which
the people of the northwest were all in
vited.
