LOCAL AFFAIRS.
Colorado Potato Bug.
The genuine Colorado Pota
to 15ug, or at least tliat wlicli
is supposed to be such, is ma
king ravages already in the
western part of this State.
Turn a pair of ducks into your
potato
j-obble
patch, and they will
up the bugs. Persons
.should be exceedingly careful
about handling these bugs, as
tbey are very poisonous.
The bug is of a roundish
oval form, about half a u inch
long and two-fifths of an inch
iiV width, of a dull cream color,
with tun black stripes 'on its
back. The thorax is dotted
with black spots. The. bugs
appear in the Spring about the
time the potato plauts begin to
sprout out of tlie ground, and
are death to the potato crop
wherever they appear, unless
checked hf tlivir ravages.
For tiv benefit of our far
mers we copy the 'following
paragraph from the leport of
the State Board !of Agriculture,
for 18(30, which givesa simple
means of destroying the bugs :
lIust the plauts with a nnx
tu're'cf Pavis-gi'ceu and' plaster,
at the rate of one part of the
former to four or five of the
latter; put into a muslin bag
and shake over the plants, ta
)c'mr rare not to let the dust
get into your eyes arid mouth,
as it is poisonous. A few. ap
plications of this remedy made
.ioon after the bugs appear will
put a stop to their operations."
Flour will answer as well as
plaster for diluting' tlie poison,
but the proportion of flour
should be about six to eight
p'a!rf3. The above remedy has
been used and always proved
clfecfcuiil.-
f Our farmers should be on
the lookout for the bugs, and
give them a dusting on their
first appearance in their potato
patches.
