Speak Kindly to thy Mother
Young man, speak kindly
to your niotlier, and courteous
ly, tenderly, of her. But n
little time'nml you shall see her
no more forever. Her eye is
dim, mul her form is bent, and
her shadow falls toward the
grave. Others may love you
fondly ; hut never agaiu while
time is yours, shall any one's
love be to you as that of your
old, ticmbliDg, weakened moth
er h;u been.
Through helpless infancy
her throbbing breast was your
safe protection and support; in
wayward, testy boyhood, she
bore patiently with your
thoughtless rudenees ; she uurs
eT you safely through a legion
of ills and maladies.
Her band bathed your burn
ing brow, or moistened your
parched lips; her eye lighted
up the darkness of nightly vig
ils, watching sleepless by your
bide as none but her could
watch. Oh, speak not .her
name lightly, for you cannot
live so many years as would
suffice to thank her fully
Through a reckless and impa
tient youth, she is your coun
sellor and solace. To a blight
manhood she guides your steps
for improvement; nor even
then forsakes or forgets.
Speak gently then, aud rev
erently, of your mother; and
when you, too, shall be old, itj
shall iu sumo d-g''ee, lighten !
the rt-mors-i which shall be.
yours fa1 other sins, to know
that never wantonly have you
outraged the respect due to
your aged mother.
The Radicals ouirht to exer
cise extra caution in restraining
their thieves and rascals just
now, for the elections are com
ing ou, and crime won't help
the. party a '. But the
thieves are bound to make hay
winks the sun shines, election
or no election ; and it happens
that, at tbo present time, the
Radical pilferers are even more
than ordinarily active. The
dispatches come freighted al
most every day with accounts
of their doings. That clerk in
the internal revenue bureau,
named Thompson, who sold the
stolen information to the New
York Central railway, got
found out curiously. The chap
demanded $,000 for his treach
ery, but could only receive
3,000. In his attempt to col
lect the additional $2,000 he
was detected and forced to re-
sign.
i-iCt toe piuuuerers go on.
The more booty they pile up,
the more' chance there will be
for such a popular disgust at
the party which fosters them
as shall uuseat it from power.

A Fish Story.
"We met a bov on the street,
and, without the ceremony of
asking- our name, he exclaimed :
"You just orter been down
t j the river a while ago 1" .
"Why V" we enquired.
'Because, a nigger was in
there swimming, and a big cat
fish came up behind him and
swallowed both of his feet, and
went swiming along on ti e
top of the water with him."
"Well, then what ?"
"Why, after a while the nig
ger swallowed his fish, and the
other fish swallowed the nig
ger aud that's the last I saw of
either of them.''
"Sonny," said we with a
feeling of alarm for the boy,
' you are in a fair way to be
come the editor of a Radical
paper.
