LAST WORDS.
Secretary Stanton's Dying
Opinion of Gen. Grant.
[Correspondence of the World]
A distinguished Louisiuniah
was in Bustou recently, and
1iad nn interview with Senator
Sumner at hU rooms in the
Coolidge House, During n
lengthy conversation with him
Mr. Sumner related an impor
tant interview, the last he ever
had with Edwin M. Stailtoii,
the late Secretary of War. It
took place shortly prior to Mr
Stanton's death. Mr. Stanton
requested Mr. Sumner to come
near his bedside. The dying
man placed his hand in that of
Mr. Sumner and said :
Sunnier, I am goiugover the
river. I shall never recover.
i wisli to say one mini: to on
before I die.
Sunnier I hope that you
are not dying, Mr, Stanton,
but go on.
Stanlon (emphatically) Gen
eral (.rant cannot administer
this government. lie is not
equal to the duties.
Sunnier Mr. Stanton, your
statement is broad.
Stanton I mean it as broad
ly as I state it. .
Sunnier Why did you not
mention this before the nomi
nation? Stanton I was busy in tny
oilie, and was not consulted
by the politicians who made
the noiuiiia'iiin. They did not
take ine into their councils.
Sumner lint, Mr. Stanton,
you made speeches during the
campaign ; why did you not
state this inipoi taut fact then?
Stanton You examine my
speeches, and you. will not find
one word in favor of Geneial
Grant for President. I spoke
of the Republican paity only.
Sumner But you say Grant
cannot administer , the govern
ment., lie succeeded well in
the army, and the people gave
him credit fo'" our succes.
Stanton (stretching forth his
light hand) Senator Sumner,
this hand supplied him with
men and' money, unlimited. I
gave him the direction of fif
fairs. I am dying, Mr, Sum
ner, and I state this to you.','
Use it whenever the interests
of the couutry demand it.
The tie vote in, the Ohio
Senate will compel the ltadi
cal party to give us a fair
redisricting of . the State. The
Lieutenant Governor lias no
Constitutional! power to . vote
on the final passage of a bill, in
the event of a tie. Even if tbe
Radicals should claim that he
has, aud he should thus vote
in violation of the Constitution,
the Democrats can still prevent
the Radicals from carrying
their point, by one Democratic
member of the . Senate absen
ting himself, thus giving the
Radicals one majority but only
eighteen votes. , It will require
nineteen votes to constitute a
quorum and make . a law. So
in any event the Radical parti
san legislation laid out. for , this
winter at Columbus .is upset.
Let our Radical .friends boar
litis fact in mind.
.Now, that - the. croquetand
base ball season is over, we
would suggest, in order that the
muscle developing process may
not lie dormant during the long
winter months that the base
ball athletics turn their atten
tion to 6awincf the wood-nilea
of widows and sick people
during the. winter. The ex-
111 a, - . ...
erase is tuny as healthful, is
not so violent, dangerous . nor
tiresome as base-ball, and we
are sure t lie results will trrati-
fy a curious public fully as
much, and we would prefer to
give the score of a wood-sawing
class, to that of a base-ball
club in our columns.
The recent discovery of iron
ore in Bedford County, Penn.,
us had the eliect of stimulat
ing enterprise in a wonderful
egree in that section of the
State. ' The new railroad from
he terminus of the Huntingtou
and the Rroad Tod. to a.
point on the Baltimore and
Ohio Road, in the heart of the
Cumberland coal renon. ha-
)een completed in far ns Ced
brd. and the wh'ole track will
be laid and in moving order
y the first of the new year.
The Road will be immediately
stocked, and starts out with a
freight of a million of tons a
year trom -the tjumberlancl
mines alone. In add tion, seve
ral hu ge furnaces will be short
ly erected along the line of this
new road, which will add large
ly to the freight business of the
new road. The iron ore of
Bedford County is said to equal
in quality the finest to be found
any where in the United
States. '
A good new paper can do
good, Show us an intelligent
family of boys and girls, ami
we will show you where news
papers are plenty. Nobody
who has been without theeo
silent, private tutors, can know
their educative power. How
important then, to secure those
which tend only to good.
Anything that makes home
pleasant, cheerful and chatty,
thins the haunts of vice, nud
the thousand and one avenues
of temptation should certainly
be regarded when we consider
its influence on the minds of
theyoung, as a great moral and
social blessing.
So dense was the smoke, from
the bin ning forests of Michigan
and Wisconsin, covering Lake
Huron and Like Superior, that
the steamer Arctic, the crack
vessel of the upper lake, trade,
was fifteen hours iu finding
Marquet te after she was ofl'that
port by clock and compass.
Such thick darkness did the
smoke establish that the steam
ers lamps were kept burning all
day the same as at night.
