Thumbnail for

Brazilian Turtles.
' The size of tlifse creatures
limy be imagined from the
fact that the flippers and feet
in crawling over the sand;
leave a track of two irregular
groove, three or four feet
npnrt, as though a wagon with
:og winds had heen driven
ever the ground. It is an
easy matter to find a turtle's
nest hy his track. She comes
out of the sen, and travels far
up on the beach to lay her eggs
in the panel, digging a hole n
foot and a half or two feet
deep for the nest. Prof. Hart
who was in Brazil with Prof.
Agassiz, says he saw a turtle
deposit one hundred and forty
three eggs in one of. these
nests. The eggs are all laid at
one sitting then covered up
closely with the sand and left
to hatch. The eggs are rather
larger than hen's eggs, round,
and covered with a tough
white skin. The Brazilians
eat the eggs, and also the flesh
of the turtle. The creature is
captured in a curious way.
Two persons go. behind it, and
taking hold of the shell turn
the animal on its back, in
which position it is at 'the
mercy of its captors, as it is
impossible for it to turn over
on its feet again. The hunters
are obliged to creep up
behind it cautiously, for as
soon as it is alarmed, it thrusts
its fore paddles into the sand,
and throws it behind, so that
the pursuers do not quickly
close their eyes they are likely
to ue be uiinueti.

SCEIBMR'S MONTHLY
An Illustrated Magazine fur the l'eople,
Cumlucteil by J. C). HOLLAND.
AVe have the pleasure
presenting to the public our
plans for the coming year, be-
irinniii'r with the third volume
in November. They involve
changes that are full of encour-
.
agement to our selves, find of
interest nnd advantage to our
readeva.
The unprecedented pat
ronage that has been accroded
to our enterprise, has left us in
no doubt that all our attempts
at greater excellence and larger
results will be met with the
most liberal spirit on the part
of tho public. "We have there
fore decided to enlarge the
magazine, nnd so to condense
is materials, while preserving
its present large and beautiful
type, as to furnish the equiv
alent of tliirty-t wo extra pages
of matter in every number, or
nearly four hundred pages
year. This enlargement will
enable us, with every issue, to
present greater number of
illustrations, and a better
variety of articles than it
would otherwise be possible to
give, and help us to realize our
purpose to make the Monthly
in all respects the finest maga
zine that can bo made in
America. We wish to have it
distinctly understood, while
instituting' this enlargement,
that wc do not propose to pub
lish the largest magazine in
the world. We shall aim
Htnply, excluding all "padd
ing' to publish the best.
