rao3fc eerious mistakes in con
ducting his domestic affairs.
Milton married the daughter
of a country squire, but lived
with her only a short timi. lie
was austere, exacting, a litera
ry recluse; while she was a
rosy, romping lass, that could
not endure the restraints im
posed upon her; so they sep
erated. Subsequently, "hew
ever, plie returned, and they
lived tolerable happy.
Queen Victoria and Prince
Albert were cousins, and about
the only example in the long
line of English monarchs
wherein the martial vows were
sacredly observed and sincere
affection existed.
Shakespeare loved and wed
ded a farmer's daughter. She
proved faithful to her vows
but we oould hardly say the
name of the great bard himself.
Like most great poets, he show
ed too little discrimination in
bestowing his affections on
the other sex.
Byron married Miss Jlilbank
to get money to pay his debts.
It turned out a bad shift.
Benjamin Franklin married
the jrirl who stood in her fath-
er a door ami iaugiif at mm
as he wanderad through the
streets of Philadelphia with a
roll of bread under his arm,
and his pockets lull of dirty
clothes. She had occassion to
be happy when she found her
self the wife of such a good
and great man.
Washingtou married a wid
ow with two children. It U
enough to say of her that she
was worthy of him, and that
they lived in perfect harmony
John Adams married a
daughter of a Presbyterian
clergyman. Her father object
ed, on account of John's being
a lawyer; he had a bad opinion
of the morals of his profession.
Thomas JeiTersou married
Mrs. Martha Skelton, a child
less widow, but she brought
him a large fortune in real
estate. After tlia ceremony
she mounted the horse behind
him, and they rode home
together. It was late in the
evening and they found the
fire out. But the great states
man hurried about and rebuilt
it, while she eized the. broom
and soon put things iu order.
It is needless to nay that they
were happy, though Jefferson
died a poor man n account of
his extreme liberality and hos
pitality. I-.'
