Earthquakes in Missouri.
Mr. Godfrey Lesieur, one of
the oldest inhabitants of South
east Missouri, has been writing
for the St. Louis ' Republican
some reminiscences of the
famous earthquakes which oc
curred in the region of New
Madrid about the beginning
of the year 1812. The first
shock took place the 16th " of
December, 1811, and was fol
lowed by several others within
the space of three months'.
Some of the shocks caused great
injury to the land, forming
extensive fissures, chancing
hih lands into lakes, and rais
ing high lands from the bottom
of dpen lakes. Some of the
lands which formerly constitu
ted the beds of lakes ave now
under cultivation, and have
proved richer and more pro
ductive than any in Southeast
Missouri. Mr. Lesieur tells a
story of theye earthquakes
which seems rather improbable,
but the truth of whtch he says
can be confirmed by many liv
ing witnesses. An old man
named Gulberson lived on his
farm on the bank of the Pemis
cot river about ten miles from
the town of Little Prairie. Be
tween the house and the river
stood his well and smoke house.
On the morning of the 16th of
December, 1811, Mrs. Culber
son started from the house to
go to the well for water, and
to the smoke house for break
fast meat, when to her utter
bewilderment neither smoke
house nor well was to be found.
A search for the mis-ing prop
erty was instituted, when both
the well and smoke house was
discovered on the opposite side
of the river. The explanation
of the phenomenon is that as
the river formed n very short
crook or angle at this point, an
opening of the earth let the
main body of the river through,
while by the great pressure of
the land wave the land at the
point of the angle was forced
across to the main shore, taking
the well and smoke house with
it. Admitting the truth of thf
story, the welt must have been
remarkably well made to have
stood so extraordinary a removal.
In the Senate, yesterday, a
liill was passed, and is now a
law, for tie erection of a cen
tral wing lor the Central Ohio
Lunatic Asylum, at a cost not
to exceed &lf)C,0OO. A Hou?e
bill waa discussed at some
length to amend the municipal
code, that where a city council
appropriates land for laying
out, opening, or widening a
' street, alley or Lighway, it shall
have power to assess the costs
and expenses upon lands bene
ntea tnereby. jno vote was

lands in the Virginia military
survey, ceded to Ohio by Uon
gress in 1871, tras passed after
a prolonged discussion. The
title to the lands by this law,
ia vested in the trustees of the
Agricultural College, who are
authorized to survey and sell
the same under certain restric
tions, applying the proceeds to
the endowment fund of the
institution. Ther are about
50,000 acres of these lands, ly
ing in the counties of Adams,
Highland, Pike, Ross and Scioto.
