Bad Manners in Washington
Society.
A mortifying expose of our
national lack of good breeding
was offered, we learn, nt the
reception lately given by the
Japanese Embassy in Wash
ington. Who the mob were,
who were invited, it is difficult
to say; they certainly bore the
names of the leaders of Wash
ington society; yet, before
half, of the guests had been
presented to their stately cn
tertaiuers, these so-called
ladies and gentlcmeu rushed
into ilie snnncr room, and not
only greedily began to devour
all Iteiore tneni, as inougu n.tu
starving, but tore down the
floral and other decorations,
until, when their hosts arrived,
the scene was one ot as general
havoc as though the swine of
Circe had been let loose in the
hall. "One of the Embassy,'1
we are told, "reaching for a
small Japanese flag on the
chandelier to present to a lady
on his arm, a United States
officer shoved him aside, and,
taking out his sword, hacked
and hewed at it to bring it
down for himself until the
Jump shades were shattered
over the table." Meanwhile,
our uncivilized guests conceal
ed their disgust at' the scene
under their usual grave court
esy. With every fresh embassy
from a' foreign countrv. it
would seem that "Washington
fashionable society devised
Borne new vulgarity as a speci
men of our national manners,
with Which we might be mor
tified by the report abroad.
When .Alexis was here, our
, ladies, in their subs'ervient an
xiety to please, comported
themselves toward him in
every public place with the
demeanor of waiting-maids
rather than well-bred women.
Young girls waited eagerly,
trembling for him to choose
them as partners in the dauce
in a' neighboring city, where
ft private supper-room was
furnished for himself and suite,
at a ball, the men took their
places first, and the ladies were
huddled in afterwards, blush
iug uuder the honor.
. The herd of admirers' who
limited after Alexis, and the
hungry, crowd who tore to
nieces the Japanese supper-
table, comprised a goodly
number of matrons. Can it be
that our women, in claiming in
dependent standing ground be
side the men, have not preceiv
i'd that the grave, self-respect
and courtesy of a gentleman
wins its way further thau the
boorishness of the ruffian?
Must they begin at the lowest
grade of manhood to work
their way .up? New York
