The Union of Democrats
The Chicago Tribune says:
The uniou of Liberal Republi
cans and Democrats in nomina
ting a State ticket is a union
of men who are agreed upon
the living questions of the day,
but who have differed upon the
questions which were pending
from 1860 to 18G8. They dif
fered, concerning Slavery, E
mancipation, and Reconstruc
tion ; but they are agreed con
cerning Reconciliation between
North and South, Imperial
ism, ' Gift-Taking, Nepotism,
Civil Service Reform, Revenue
Reform, and so on.
There are some who profess
to see a vast deal that is odious
in such a union. It is, howev-
er, tne same Kina oi & union as

ams, Fessendeo, and Lincoln,
1S54-6, formed with Demo
crats like Chase, Bryant, Fre
ruont, Trumbull, "Wilmot and
Frank Blair, to form the Re
publican party. It is the same
kind of a union as these Re
publicans in 1861, formed with
War Democrats like Staunton,
Grant, Batler, Dix and Logan,
to carry on the war. It is the
same kind of a union as the
Grant Republicans would now
like to form with Democrats if
they could the earnest longs
ing for which they express
when they declare as many
Democrats will vote for Grant
as for Greeley. The Republi
can party nominated Andrew
Jolrason with Lincoln 1864 to
secure Democratic vote's. It
Nominated Grant m 1868 to
secure Democratic votes.
When a political party ceases
to gri'W by gaining accessions
to their ranks, is has bejmn to
die. While the Liberal and
Democrats consist of men who
agree on questions f policy
and principle, the Grant party
compromises men who agree
on no principle whatever, and
liave no bond oi auuesion, ex-
cept obe'dience to Grant. Some
of the Grant Republicans favor
Amnesty; some oppose it.
Some favor Civil Service Re
form, and some oppose it.
boine, like Locran, profess to
Iks -Revenue Reformers, and
some are high Protectionists.
Some vot for the Ku Klux
bill, and some against it. Their
rallying campaign is: "Any
thintj to elect Grant."
