Columbus and Hocking Valley
At ' the regular monthly
meeting of the Directors, held
yesterdny, the semi-annual ex
hibifc of the company wa"9 pre-

factory condition. The pjst,
present and luture of the road
were tully and ireeiy aiscussea
and after a throrough exam
amination into all departments
of the road, the Directors pon-
eluded unanimously to an
nounce to the stockholders that
they feel fully justified in pla
cing the road upon a regular
ten per cent, cash dividend
paying basis, and saying that
the road would, from, its net
earnings, hereafter maintain
that dividend; would pay the
sinking fund required to be
annually set aside by the terms
of the mortgaged bonds, and
would have a large surplus to
be applied in yearly increasing
the equipment of the road, as
it is plainly evident will be
required by the regular and
constant increase of business.
Having concluded that the
payment of cash dividends
should not be commenced, ur
less they were certain that they
be hereafter regularly made
each six months, and that the
amount of the dividend should
be as nearly as possible the
same each year, they ordered
tue nrst regular easy dividend
to be five per cent, for the past
six months, and feel assured
that each January and July

We are happy to announce

our People on the assured suc

hesitation in saying that in a
great measure it is due to the
'energy, economy and, ability of
tne omcers ana jjireccors, who,
being so largely interested as
stockholders, will' look after
the interests of all the stock
holders as they care for their
own property. The stock is
now quoted at par, and it re
quires no peculiar foresight, in
our opinion, to see that it will
be at such premium as the
certainty of ten per cent cash,
with an occasional stock divi
dend" will warrant. The Hock
ing'Valley road having now
passed into lice as a finished,
successful enterprise, let us be

ing that the same energy and
ability put forth in that, as was
given the . Hocking Valley,

The Value of a Newspaper.
The following is the experi
ence of a mechanic concerning
the benefits of a .newspaper:
Ten years ago I lived in a
town in Indiana. , Un return
iug home one night, for I am a
carpenter by trade, I saw a
little girl leaving my door, ana
I asked my wife who she was.
She said Mrs. Harris had sent
her after their newspaper,
which my wife had borrowed.
As wc sat down to tea my
wife said to me by name:
T wish you would subscribe
for the newspaper; it is so much
comfort to me when you are
away from home.'
'I wouhllike to do so,' 6aid
I, 'but you know I owe a pay
ment on the house and lot.
It will be all I can do to meet
She replied: 'If you will take
this paper I will sew for the
ailorto pay tor it.
I subscribed for the paper;
ic came in uue time 10 tne snop.
While resting one noon and
looking over it, I saw an ad
vertisement of the county com
missioners to let a bridge that
was to be built. 1 put in a
bid for the bridge, and the job
was awarded to me, on which I
cleared $300, which enabled
me to pay for my house and
lot easily, aud for the newspa
per. If I had not subscribed
for the newspaper I would not
have knovyn anything about
the contract, and could not
have met my payment onj .my
