How to Swarm and Hive
I have kept bees for thirty
nna vpjirn: have had erood luck
with them, and a great deal of
pleasure for them.
Ynn have, uo doubt, often
heard bee men speak of bees
Imnivinfr out: or in other words
the outside of
the hive and play there for .sev
eral days. I have had them
commence making comb9 un
der the hive; for fear I should
lose a swarm, I Hre spent a
great many weeks, in" watching
Two years ago, I thought,
as I was watching them, I
could hear them whispering
and saying, "Do give us a
home." So I went and got an
empty hive, and washed it out
with salt and water and. mo
lasses, and set it close' by the
other hive, where the bees
were hanging out; took a big
pan and a house-brush, wet the
pan and brush with sweetened
water, then brushed the ' bees
very carefully Vthe ' pan 'and
turned it up againsljthe empty
hive, and let it remain, there,
while I took the old hive away
about ten or fifteen feet. Then
I turned and shook the pan
verv erentlv. andthfi bees all
went in and wetft toTWork like
busv bees, I assure you,
I made five swarms in the
same wav. and I never ; had
bees work better. Last : sea
son I had but two swarmsj
they came out at the same time
and settled on a tree close by,
and I hived them in the old
I used the square hive, thir
teen inches square and four
teen inches high, with a pane
or erlass on the back side the
whole bigness of the hive, cov
ered with a slide. For a cap I
make a box eight by ten, with
a glass eight by ten on the
back side, with a slide so I can
look in and see when the cap
i9 full. I have a two inch hole
directly in poiDt, under the
cap, through which the bees
go into the cap.
Had I made the above dis
covery of swarming bees thir
ty years ago, I could have sav
ed hundreds of dollars.
formycaps on trie same
hive I have tin frames seven
by nine, filled with glass, ex
cept the lower part, which sets

on rne main nive on tne two
mch hole. When I take off
the cap I have a tin cover to
fasten on with little wire hin
ges. I put the eight-by-ten
wooden caps over the glass
caps, and putty them down so
the millers can not get in. My
hive sets on wire cloth, raised
one inch, with drawer under
each hive for the millers to
work in. I have taken out fif
teen millera in one niornine.

The nomination of Mr, Gree

Grant has been a severe blow
to the Grant newspapers thro'
out the country. Heretofore
the Tribune has ' furnished the
braius to run Radical newspa

principal editor has made it
necessary to look to some oth
er source for editorial ability.
To accomplish this a new Bu
reau is about to be established
at the government's expense
at Washington, called the Ed
itorial Bureau, from which
editors are to be manufactured
and sent to' all the; papers in
the interest of the administra
