Balloons.
The first idea of the ; balloon
was suggested by a Jesuit priest,
Francis Lana, in 1670; but the
ftfihial invention of balloons is
of much later date, and is due
to Stephen aud Joseph de Mont-
golfier, paper manufacturers, at
Annonay, near Lyons, stance
The first public experiment was
made by them on June 5, 1783.
Their balloon, weighing 600
pounds, and containing 22,000
cubic feet (French . measure,)
was sent up, .and rising to an
elevation of nearly a mile, des
cribed a horizontal line of 7,200
feet, and Gradually sank. The
first sere-nautical voyage was ac
complished on November 21, of
the same year, when M. Jriiatre
de Rozier and the Marquis d'Ar-
landes ascended inaMontgolfier
balloon from the Chateau de la
Muette, near Passy, gained an
elevation of nearly 3,000 feet,
and after : catching fire, which
was easily extinguished by the
intrepid voyagers, descended
safely, after a journey of six
miles, ' which was performed in
from twenty'to twenty-five minutes.
"Pa," said a son to his father,
"what is meant by 'chip of the
old block?'"
"Whv. mv son. do vou ask
e 1 '
that question?"
"Because I was in Enfield this
morning, and told them gentle
men that while huntinc 1 saw
fifty squirrels up one ' tree,
They kept trying to make me
say I did not see cut forty-nine,
and because I wouldn t say so.
thev said I was a 'chip of the
old block."'
A Radical editor attended
a musical entertainment, but
when the first piece was announ
ced, "Strike the lyre," he ran off,
shouting "Ku-kluk." He "made
sure" they were after him.
Corn being cheaper- than

the people of that State are using
it for fuel is not amazing. Any
