Railroad Conductors,
From ft report ' presented to
the Life Insurance Company of
the Railroad Conductors of the
United States we learn that dur
ing the year ending August 1,
1872, no less than thirty-two
conductors have been removed
from the association, either by
sujjden death, disease or perma
nent disability 1 for life oh the
road. An examination into the
statistics of these removals shows
the following facts: Sateen
conductors met with deaths at
their posts, of whom eleven were
on ' freight trains ' and five , with
passenger trains. Two conduc
tors had each an arm amputated,
and one lost a leg by accident;
one died of sunstroke on the
New Jersey Southern, three died
of spine disease, and twelve
died of consumption, every one
of whom were passenger conduc
tors. It is a matter of grave
consideration for conductors gen
erally that the disease claims
such a large percentage of their
number, but it is presumable
that eating hurried meals, keep
ing irregular hours and exposure
to all weather is the cause ot it,
As the main' railroads-of this
country are all earning large
dividends for their stockholders,
thev are in condition to have a
sufficient number of. conductors
to prevent them being brought
to early graves by overwork. The
post of a conductor on a passen
ger train is a fearfully responsi
ble one. The lives of hundreds
of human beings are daily in
their keeping. This being the
case, it is important that;: they
should have the full possession
of all their physical and taental
vigor, in order to meet any eftier
gency that may arise. This they
cannot have if compelled to'run
constantly between widely" sepa
rated points. If railways" will
employ more conductor and pay
tkam liberally they will decrease
the mortality among this class of
their employes, and ayame time
increase the safety of their trains.
Recipe for Growing Plump.
Go to bed about half-past eight
or nine, and don t be m a hurry
about getting up in the morning.
On going to bed and on getting
up in the morning drink as
much cold water as you can
swallow. Soon you will' learn
to drink two tumblers ; and some
persons may learn to drink, still
more. Drink all that your sto
mach will bear. . Spend a good
deal of time in the open air
without hard exercise, but . ex
posed to the sun. If practicable,
ride in a carriage V some hours
every day. " Remain put enough
to give you a good appetite, but
don t work hard enough to pro
duce excessive perspiration. Eat
a great deal o oat-meal porridge,
cracked wheat, . Graham mush,
baked sweet apples, roasted and
broiled beef, though the vegeta
ble partis more fattening than
the animal part. Lie down an
hour in the middle of, the . day,
just before you take your dinner,
to rest, and, if possible,' take a
a little nap. ;' Cultivate jolly peo
ple. "Laugh and grow, fat" rests
upon a sound 'physiological ba
sis. A pleasant' flow of the social
spirit is a great proinptet of di
gestion. Keep your; skin clean,
sleep in a room where 1, the. sun

you will be as plump as you

mistakes; and he. is the best
