THE SAILOR BOY.
BY W. H. P.
AIR "Jack Xunrv."
The flrst I saw my handsome Kill,
It was in eighteen tweutv-nlue;
A smlilou thought passed thru' my head,
The wish Hint the waa mine. ,
So to conrt her I began,
Though in me she took no pride;
A sailor die said I muit be,
llelore she would be my brldo.
So at sailing I straight did go,
But not to the iniglity sea;
I Bulled upon the auction block
That Is the place to sail for me.
Prom this gal I long
The term of seven 1
did stray,
long years:
When I returned she did not know
This clattering auctioneer.
When I took her by the hand,
' Her cheek was pale: she cried
A grieving for her sailor boy.
Whom, she supposed had died. .
"You should uot think, of hint alone,"
I unto ker did say( . i .
"I'e rhaps he has found another gal, ,
And with her he's gone to stay,
"If you will but reject him
And consent to marry me,
Then I will quit my rambling; round
O, how happy we could bel"
. "Go sway from me, kind sir," said she,
"To me you shan't come near;
Since I hitvo lost my sailor boy, .
I will hare no auctioneer!"
"O," said I. "your sailor is safe I
You need not have a fear;
The ship's been wrecked, but I escaped,
And I now play auctioneer!"
Sho looked at ml with scrutiny.
And her heart was llUed with joy;
"Oh," snld she, "I know you now.
You are my sailor boy !"
She kissed me smack right In the faco,
And for joy she shed a tear;
"Oh,1' said she, "the license get,
And I will marry this auctioneer."
A messenger was then dispatched,
And the minister drew near:
Right then and there he joined this gal
I nto this auctioneer.
Tinio glides on, aud all goes well,
And that's been forty year;
And still 1 have my handsome gal,
And she loves this auctioneer.

The Coolest Robbery on Record.
Policeman Badger, of the
Tenth Station, had a bit of ex
perience the other night which
he is not fond of talking about.
It was past midnight, as he was
leisurely pushing his beat thro'
Jessup 6treet, and as he came
opposite" to Drayton & Fogg's
jewelry store he observed gleams
of liffht through the chinks of
the shutters, and he rapped at
the door.
"Is that you, policeman?"
asked a voice within.
"Yes," answered Badger.
"Well, it's only me. - It's all
right. Kind o' chilly out, isn't
it?"
"Yes." .,
"Thought so. I was just fixing
the fire. Good night.
Badger said "good-night," and
pursued his way.
An hour afterward Badger
passed through Jessup street
again, and saw the light in the
jewelry store. It didn't look
right, and he banged the door
loudly.
"Hallo 1" cried the voice with
in, "is that you, policeman ?"
"Yes."
"All right. Won't you come
in and warm? It won't hurt
anything for you to slip from
your beat a minute."
The door was opened, and Po
liceman Badger entered, and he
found the inmate to be a very
gentlemanly-looking man in. a
linen-duster.
"Come right up to the stove,
policeman. Excuse me a mo
ment." The man took the ash-pan
from the bottom of the stove,
and when he had returned and
wiped his hands, he said, with a

And the man in the duster
produced a black bottle and

Policeman Badger partook,
and having wiped his lips; and
given his fingers a new warming,
he left . the store and resumed
his beat, satisfied that all
