The rivers and harbors bill, as amended by the senate, and as it wW probably stand --when ilnally passed, direets the national wa. terways commission to make a careful stady of the advisability and feasibil ity of the proposed canal from Lake Erie, by way of Fort Wayne, or by some other djrect and feasible route, to. the soutbern end of Lake Michigan, and of a canal from the Ohio river, at a point near Pittaburg, to Lake Ere. No esuch provi sion is put in with respect to the invew tigation of the proposed canal conneot. ing Lake Erie With Lake Michigan. By the terms of the new rivers and harbors bill, the waterways commis sion is to have two years itrom the 4th of March in which' to investigate these projects. In making the investi gations the commission is authorized to call upon the engineer corps of the army to furniah data. Nearly every observer with a large range of vision is convinced that soon er or later, a canal connecting Lake Erie with the lower end of Lake Michigan will be built; and that a canal will eventually connect Lake Erie or Lake Michigan with the Ohio rver. Persons who have devoted some study to this subject of artificial water ways are disposed to believe that when the. country Is ready for a eanal connecting the Ohio river with one of the great lakes the demand will be for a canal extending from Lake ich gan, through Indiana to the Ohio river. There are many reasons for bele~e Ig that as soon as the Panama canal is completed, the bauldlag of artlicial waterways here at homie ll tie udea taken o a large scale.
