SEPTEMBER 21, 1918, " - - This paper has enlisted with the government in the cause of America for the period of the war .....- - - - - .. THE COLORED AMERICANS In commuting the death sen tences of 10 of 16 colored sol diers convicted in the courts-mar tial growing out of the Houston, Tex., riots some time over a year ago, President Wilson says: ''I desire the clemency here ordered to be a recognition of the-splendjd loyalty of the race to which these soldiers belong and an inspiration to the people of that race to further zeal and service to the country of which they are citizens, and for the liberties of which so many of them are now bravely bearing arms at the very front of great fields of battle." It is-believed that the action of the President, especially with his reason given for hisclemen cy, will meet with the approval of the American people. The colored Americans as a race have proved their loyalty' a- soldiers, as workers, and as citizens generally. There are no exact figures of the amount of Liberty Loan bonds and War Savings Stamp they have pur chased, but enough is known to- warrant the statement that according to their means and ability their financial support of the Government has been splen did. The Treasury Department as of more than one occasion r iferred to this tact. The Presi dent's action above mentioned, it is believed and hoped, will .ring a hearty response from tie colored Americans in the Fourth Loan. AN ACRE OF WHEAT FOR EACH FARM PLOW Louisiana farmers are urged to plant not less than one acre of wheal for each plow in oper ation on the farm. "While Louisiana is not a wheat-growing state and we would not suggest the planting f rit as a money crop, the call of the world for more bread is lq urgent that Louisiana farm ,--s are asked to plant a small acerage of wheat this fall," 3s W. R. Perkins, Director .xte~nsion, Louisiana State Piersity. "Plant not less than acre for each plow in opera tion on your farm. Under es pecl illy favorable conditions a greater area may be planted. The expense of this crop is bmall and the risk of not mak in.. it, profitable is slight if good farm methods are followed in planting the crop," PREPERATION. Selecta good grade of clay or loam soil that is Iwel! diained. Plow thoroughly atand horrow fine as so n as the soil is found in good cnditi(,n, just as in preparing, for oats ILet the land stand until the lat P tr part of October and then I plant the wheat. I PLANTING. Use one bushel of seed per acre of the Red May, Fultz, Fulcaster, or other south ern grown varieties. FERTILIZERS, Unless the .soil is very productive it will bt 'advisable to apply two to three hundred pounds of the standard corn or cotton fertilizers either ready mixed cr mixed at home, applying on the surface at planting time at d harrowin in. One hundred pounds of nitrate of soda in February or March is ja'most invariably a profitable .application. It's The Early Bird That Catches The Worm.
