And tho Conn iliTHli' Captain Kiddle VB ltfleAMt-d I roui 1'risou. A Kentucky coutriluitor sends to Tho Youth's C'oinpfinion n j It asinjr umvdote of Abruhnm Lincoln. It has never beforo born )iiMishiil, ho says, and was received by 1dm from tho oilier party to the story, who is still living in Kentucky. It illus trates once more the p-nlal, friendly tem per of tho jrreat war president. During the presidential vampal'rn of 1810, when Gen eral William Henry Harrison was tho Whig candidate, Lincoln, then a young man just rising into prominence, accepted an invl tution to address an audience in Union county, Ky., at a Whig KirlM-cue. lie wns met nt a landing on tho Ohio river al)out ten miles from the place of the Larbecuo by a committee, headed by Cap taln George W. Kiddle and was escorted to tho meeting seated in a spring wagon by the side of Captain Kiddle, the driver. On tho road Mr. Lincoln entertained tho committee with several mousing nnec dotes and on nrrlving at his destination 'dcllvcrod an able and eloquent address prolibly the only address that ho ever do livered in his native state. After the Fja-aklng Captain Kiddle, who 'commanded a military co?nwiuy, fired a salute in honor of the orator of tho day, but tho cannon, an old six iioundcr, was overcharged and exploded, though with out any serious results. Captain Riddlo raised 'u subscription to pay Mr. Lincoln's exivnses, contributing lilKTally himself, and then escorted him kick to tho river, The future president was much pleased with his visit and so expressed himself. Many years passed. Air. Lincoln was -elected chief mnglstratc of tho nation, and the civil war broke out. Captain Kiddle took sides with the south and having ci- pressed his opinions rather loldly was ar rested for treason and sent to Camp Chase, a military prison. "It was a dull and gloomy place for ine," said tho old gentleman in relating tho story, "and after I had remained there about ten days I got homesick and con eluded I would remind my friend Lincoln of bygone hours, fco I wrote to Lira as fol lows: 'Mr pEAn Mrc. rRr.stnr.NT Aftrr present ing my compliments to you I wish to remind you that a rood many years ngo I b:d you In tow at a Whig barbecue, m ar Morcanflt id, in Union county, Ky. On that owiHion I trlod to Wat you kindly, and even burst my cannon fn firing a salute in your tumor. I hope you have not forgotten It. Now, sir, you have me in tow. and I am your prisoner hrro in Camp Chase I am lonesome and homesick and want to b t bark to my old wife, rioaw let mo go. "Yours truly, George W. Riddle. When Mr. Lincoln received this letter. lie laughed heartily and nt once wrote up on tho lack of it: "l'leaso let Captain Georffo W. Kiddle a) homo. A. Lincoln.' ARE MOVING SOUTH. MICHIGAN IS BECOMING ALARMED AT THE EXODUS OF HER PEOPLE. The Passenger Association of That State Will Heuceforth Refuse to Give Home Seekers Reduced Fares This Will Not, It I Thought, Stop Emigration. Emigration from the middle west to the south lias attained such proportions that it is viewed by the press and many of tho people of tho former section with a degree of disfavor that is nkiu to alarm. The htate of Michigan is cue of tho commonwealths that are seriously affected by this movement. In order to check the exodus the Passenger associa tion of that state has taken action apain.t giviug reduced rates to homo seekers' excursions. Tho Detroit Journal says that this action was taken on tho ground that such excursions encourage emigration to the disadvantage of tho state. The in terests of tho railroads represented, us well as thoe of the state, are involved, and The Journal says the association took an "intelligent view of tho mat ter." Our Detroit contemporary sub mits that if the railroads should by of fering special excursion inducements encourage emigration their own inter ests v ould snll'er more rr less therefrom. We suppose this is lawful and it may h politic, but it is very unusual, if not an entiii ly i:ew departure. It has never been the custom of transportation com panies to discriminate in favor of ouo and jigainsi another kind cf excursion parti-. s. The railroads have made re ductions in rates for political, religious, social, educational and many other in terests. During the campaign of 1S90 millions of men were transported for half faro or les, and many of them for n pood deal less, in order that they might atti r.d political meetings. This wns not merely proper, but commend able, and we have no doubt it was prof itable to the railroads. There aro half fare excursions every day in the year to points of interest in all parts of the country. Hundreds of them po to every point of the compass cn long or short routes to the profit of tho roads, to the benefit of the people whom they carry and of the residents of the localities which they visit. During the last few years tho home seekers' excursion has become almost an established institu tion, and it has received the same con sideration at the hands of the railways that they have accorded to other parties. But it appears that Michigan lias had enough of this kind of traveling, and the railroads of that state deem it expe dient to apply tho brakes in the shape of full fare for all home seekers whether they go singly or in hundreds. Tho Journal thinks that in taking this ac tion against homo seekers' excursions tho association has undoubtedly done a good thing for the would be home seek ers, who would avail themselves of tho inducements offered to emigrate to some other state. The reason why The Jour nal thiuks that way is found in its as sertion that Michigan is ono of tho best and most desirable states of the Union to live in and that, of the pcrplo who have moved out of it, hoping and expect ing to better tluir condition, a largo majority have been disappointed. Undoubtedly Michigan is a pood state for all of her citizens who are contented, but that a great many Michigan people are not contented is evident from this action cf the transportation companies. Many familie s from that state have gone south, and others are preparing to go. This denial of excursion rates may chock the movement to some extent, but it will not stop it. The advantage s oftired by the south will inevitably draw large ly from the northwest. Washington Post. Itrnlns by the Million Tons. A recent estimate has it that there are nearly 2,000,000 tons of brains in this world. The statement looks more than fictional at first. One suspects that Richard Harding Davis or Stephen Crane may have added a few hundred thousand to the figures as representing tho amount of their own gray matter. But tho total is vouched for by one of those extraordinary dabblers in figures who like this sort of calculation. There may be that quantity, but a good deal of it must be very shopworn, and somo of those whoso brows aro bulging must have got their contents at a barguiu counter sale. For instance, take those disciples of the Aubrey Beardsley cult. They run so much to convolutions that ono is pardoned for thinking their brains may be a little twisted liko their work. Then tho man who gets up tho yellow kid supple ments. Tho coloring matter in his head must be something moro lurid than gray. If it is yellow, it is not first class stuff and therefore does not count in tho sum total. Cigarette fiends, and there are many of them, probably have just smoke wreaths inside their skulls, but the smoke, being solid, counts in tho alarming total. For the 2,000,000 tons of brain there are an awful lot of follies in tho world. There must be a ton of foolishness to every ounce of brain, so tho sum total of folly must be almost us heavy as the reputed weight of the world itaelf. Pittsburg News. Hope of Youth.
