Although it is still several months be fore the annual firemen' tournament. which this year takes place at Hough ton, the Red Jacket department is al reaay mating preparations to tako an active pare in me tournament ana are looklDg ahead to one of the most success ful tournaments the Upper Peninsula firemen have ever held. That the local department will be we!l represented is aurtd and that it will make itself con rpicuous in its efforts to fee that the tournament is a huge success is alo th endeavor of the members of the depart ment. Tley have decided to go into the tournament with a vim and determina tion to do something that will be a credit to the town. In the first place they will present a very striking appearance. Heretofore they have gone into the tournaments wimoui naving a uniform of much ac count, but the Council has become gener ous and appreciative of the good work the fire laddies have always done when called upon and will see that they are fitted out with uniforms of a very pretty pattern. Vivian, the tailor, is making them and they are nearly completed. The council donated 200 for the pur pose of fitting out the boys and the bal anre of the cost will be put up by each of the firemen out of bis own pocket. it is mieuaea to organize several rac Jug teams anion the firemen to take part in the various contests and the meab rs are already getting in training for the event. In each of thee teams the work of coupling counts for more than anythiDcelte and half a d zen of the members are working on the coup ling trying to g-t that part of it down to a fiae toint race. A well known young man of this city has been confiding to some of bis friends a good joke which happened to him last Saturday evening when he visited friends in the Fortage Lake town. He and a friend with whom be was to spend the night were at Hancock during the even ing and by the time they started for the friend' borne in Houghton, the storm that was raging was not to be laughed at. Crossing the bridge it was worse and when about half way over the friend's hat was blown over the bridge on to tie ice. The thermometer registered rathtr low by this time and the wind that was blowing was strong enough to blow the top of one's head off, so the man without the hat thought. Tne friend determined on running oyer to the other side of the lake and back on the ice for the lost bat and instructed bis Calumet partner to go up to the house and keep his head warm. The Caluoift boy thought this the proper plan and started for the boue, which be found with no little difficulty. But when he- arrived be found the door locked. He dared not bell tor fear of awakening the he knew they would take him cast, being without a hat and his balr' in the way it was. So nothing remained to be done but stand in the storm hed and let the wind take its course through bis curly locks until the friend arrived nearly an hour later with the hat which he fin ally captured after a hard ft tit with the wind. The Houghton friend thought it was a good joke, but the Calumet boy did not see it that way until the next morning. He said be thought several times of ring ing the door bell, but on eecond conoid ati on he feared they might take him to a burglar or most any old thing and make it too interesting for him.
