There was a notable gathering o! med ical men ol the two counties at the Calu met hospital last etening when Trol. Vic tor C Vaughn, who is dean of the depart ment o! medicine and surgery at the Uni versity o! Michigan and perhaps one of the most distinguished hjgenic teachers and writers in the country today, "vas present and gave an address. Whn it was known that Dr. Fomeroy had made arrangements with Dr. Vaughn to visit this city, the physicians of the county looked forward with pleasure to the event and they were more than pleased with the doctor and the able paper he presented. Prof. Vaughn's sub ject was "The White Blood Corpuscle" and the paper Is pronounced by all the physicians as exceedingly interesting. After the reading of the paper a general discussion of the subject by the physi cians was indulged in and after that the wants of the inner man were attended to by Mine Host Jud P. North, of the Calumet Hotel, in a yery pleasing way. Lemonade and ice water is said to have been one of the courses and the doctors all say they never enjoyed an evening as well for many a day. Beside the members of the Calumet staff, the other physicians practicing about the city and the stall of the Bige low syndicate of mines, there were pres ent Drs. McRae. of Certral; Hosking, of Alloufz; Downer, Barnham and McEl veen, of Hancock; Wheeler, Jones and Maas, of Houghton; A bra ma, of Dollar Bay; Fischer and Orr. of Lake Linden, and Lunn, of Marquette. Dr.-Vaugha arrived in the city on the afternoon train yesterday and is the guest of Dr. E. II. Pomeroy during his stay. He was more than pleased with the new hospital at Calumet and pro nounced it one of the best equipped in the country. Hade qlck Tine. The Soo Light Guard has not, as jet, demonstrated much ability to bluster or show off nicely on dres parade, but Cap tain Welsh and bis officers and men have demonstrate! that they are ready for actual service and can be on their way to the front in quick time. A call to arms was sounded by the court house bell, at 7:30 Tuesday night, without previous knowledge to the members of tr-e com pany. The men were scattered through out the city, some over a mile from the armory, while otbere were in Canada at. tending a Christian Endeavor society meeting. The company assembled, dressed in heavy marching equipment and marched in double quick time to the depot, one mile distant from the armory, in thirty-seven minutes from the firi-t tap of the bell. Over 00 per cent, oi the entire company reached the depot in the time as above stated.
