New Orleans, March 2. The Maher-Fitzsimmons fight, which takes place to-night before the Olympic Club, is the all-absorbing topic among the dense crowd of sports pssembled in the corridor of the St. Charles Hotel and club house this morning. Maher, ac companied by Billy Madden, ar rived yesterday and is keeping his identity a secret. His friends say he is mingling with the crowd at the St. Charles Hotel. His antag onist, Bob Fitzsimmons, arrived this morning from Bay St. Louis with his second, backers and friends. He was met at the depot by hundreds of his admirers, who followed him through the streets of the city. He looks in fine con dition and says he will enter the ring weighing 170, while Maher will "pull the beam to 180. An even money bet was posted in the hotel rooms this morning until Fitzsimmons arrived, when odds were 9 to 10 in favor of Fitpsim mons. Maher says he will push the fight from the word go, and try to best his man inside of six rounds. Charley Mitchell is in the city, and it is rumored that Governor Stone of Mississippi has sent detectives here to arrest him for his connection with the Sulli-van-Kilrain fight Five hundred people holding tickets to the Ryan-Needham fight last night did not go, and are de manding the return of their mon ey from the Metropolitan Club, which will be returned to them. A double murder wa.1 committed at Fayette Corner in Hardemann county, Tenn., yesterday, a father and son falling victims to the bul lets of the assassins. A Demo cratic primary was in progress when Tom Rogers, a young man went up to the poll and offered to vote. He tendered his ballot to one of the officers of the election but instead of depositing the vote in the box, that person said Rogers was a Republican and had no right to vote. With that he took the ticket up and tore it to pieces and stamped on them. Sam Hunter a bystander drew his pistol and shot young Rogers in the head killing him instantly and then shot old man Rogers who was standing near by. The father is resting easy at last account. SCOTTSVILLE, Ky., March 2 Yesterday afternoon Briggs Cald well shot and killed Fount Justice and Charles Hancock in the western part of this county near Simpson the county line. Cald well and Justice were brothers-in-law. There had been an old grudge between them for some time. At present there arc four men under arrest in different parts of the county under the suspicion of being the man who committed the outrage upon Mrs. Charles L. Taylor, of this city a week ago and telegrams are coming in hourly from1 other places asking for information. The men are held at Mason City, Mo., St. Louis, Lexington, Mo and Cen- treville, Iowa. The Heralds Washington correspon dent has been preparing a table showing the presidential prefer ences of state delegations to the Democratic national convention. The figures are based upon inter views with the congressional rep resentatives of the states in Wash ington. The computation is made on the basis of 900 delegates in the nat'onal convention of which the Heralds man classifica tion "upon competent and quoted authority" is as follows: Hill 2 3$, Cleveland 265, for some western man 350. Cleveland seems to be the choice of fifteen states, they arc California, Con necticut, Deleware, Maine, Massa chusetts, Minnesota, New Hamp shire, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, Wash ington, West Virginia, and Wis consin. Hill is said to be the choice of ten states. They arc Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Mary land, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Caro lina and Texas. Geographically the Hill states are southern states 5, middle states 3, western states 2, politically 7 are Democratic and 3 Republican. Major John F. Herbert was in Ennis, Ellis county yesterday on business but like a true Mills man turned in worked hard all day with the boys for the Mills candi date for representative, carrying Ennis by 45 majority and the county by over 500 for Mr. Dealt the Mills candidate.
