To The Editor or The Dat
I notice that it was stated in Farmer
Shaw's paper that tho great railroad
magnates, Jay Gould and C P. Hunt
ington, wero meeting upon tho bor
ders of Texas, tho object of whioh was
in the interest of George Clark in his
oandidaoy for governor.
"I was very much surprised at this
information, as the gentleman know
full well, that through tho instrumen
tality of Governor Hogg (while at
torney goncral) and his triends, that
thoy had enabled Jay Gould to steal
a railroad in this stato, which overy
citizen knows full well.
"I incloso you a letter from a per
sonal friond of mino, sending me a
dipping from the Jowett MehBengcr,
which fully explains if true, and I
have no right to question Mr. Gould's
position in this gubernatorial canvass-
"If Farmer Shaw is correot in stat
ing that tho meeting of these gentle
men on our bordors wa in tho in
terest of tho gubnernatorial candidate,
it certainly was in tho interest of tho
Hon. James S. Hogg, as this clipping
will fhow. Yours truly,

"Dear Sm In reply to your favor
of yesterday, I incloso a dipping from
tho Jowett Messenger. The test
elootion alluded to was gotten up by
tho Jewett Messenger, and whilo in
progress Jay Gould's privato train was
switohed off at Marquez, whore ic re
mained over night. Whether it is a
fact that Jay Gould aotually express
ed himself for Hogg, I oannot say, as
tho clipping wbb my first information
in regard to the matter That such
has gono out to the world, howovor,
is evident from the dipping. Don't
know whether Jay Gould will affirm
or deny, if it should come under his
observation. Anyhow, "Rah for
Clark." Yours, etc.,

In the Jowett Messenger's test elec
tion, Jay Gould, tho railroad king,
voted for Hogg for governor. Madi
sonvillo Messenger.

fact. It happened in this way. Mr.
Gonld recently passed down tho Inter
national and Gieat Northorn railroad
on routo faom Now York City to tho
City of Mexico, and, rcaohing
Marquez, lato in tho eve
ning, spent tho night
thero Tho polls of tho Messenger's
test election wore open at tho time,
and Mr. Gould was furnished with a
ticket which ho voted and deposited
with the manager of our eleotion at
Marquez, who forwarded the same to
us. The Messenger did not intond to
say publicly how any ono voted in our
test election, as it is a privilege to
whioh we do not feel entitled, and the
above faots was communicated pri
vately to the editor of tho Madison,
villo Messenger whilo we wore with
few days .ngo at Rogors'

Chief Prescott and his able assist
ants of the Waco Fire Department
are perfecting arrangements as
rapidly as possible for the entertain
ment of tho Stato Fire Association,
which meets in this city next month
Among the other items on the pro
gramme is a plunge in the Natatonum
pool and a ride over the city on the
Citizens' line.
Thero will be at this meeting about
300 delegates. A nobler band of men
th&n any body ol soldiers that ever
fought to kill his fellow man.
When Waco h honored by such a
gathering she should rise to the occa
sion and entertaiin them handsomely.
To this end a committee will wait on
the people soon and it is a conceded
fact that they will iind little trouble
in getting all the means necessary for
the suitablo entertainment.
