To Tin: News: I read an at tide
in jour paper yesterday bearing the
above caption, and 1 do not write
this to coirect a fev immaterial
errors, but to add my testimony to
that of tho gentleman writing from
Atlauta. My recollection is that
tl c first cotton exposition waa held
in Atlanta iu 1880, instead of 1881.
At that time tho city had a popula
tion of about 4S,000, though "00, 000
was claimed by taking in the
suburbs of Edgewood and West
End. So you see Atlanta was
about doublo tho size of Waco in
18S0. At that time 1 was oliticg a
paper thero, and it being my homu
for several yoar? I think 1 know
the town pretty well
The pnjectors had a hard pull at
the start, but like a ano-v ball it
grew as it rolled along. Such men
as Howell, Jackson, Grady and
Kimball took the lead, and though
opposed by some of the wealthiest
men in the city, they pushed ahead
and tho result w.is a grand ana
glorious success, causing even the
maeabacks to open their eyes in
wonder and astonishment.
Tnat exposition was tho beginning
of a wonderful era of progress and
prosperity. Foreign capital (lowed
in, new factories were established
on every hand, and lodiy Atlanti is
probably the largest interior manu
facturing city in the South. Atlan'a
manufactured goods are sold in
Waco, such as gine, condensers,
syrup evaporators, paper bags and
many other articles.
Waco should adopt one of
Atlanta's ideas, and that is to put
young men at the head of city
affiirs and give them a showing iu
the Texas Cotton Palace. In
Atlanta they never asked how much
money a fellow had, but how much
brains and energy he possessed,
Henry Grady was a personal
friend of the writer. He was not a
rich man, but he and his gang of
hustlers managed to control affairs,
and success always crowned their
efloi ts. Nothing like everybody
pulling at one end of the rope.
Tho people of Atlanta possessed
a wonderful amount of city pride,
and this cemented and unified the
businecs men, professional men and
men of all classes, rich and poor
al ke, 3ud no enterprise was to big
for them to tackle, from building a
cotton factory to erecting a million
dollar stato house.
I write to encourage such men : s
Rigins, Rotau, Moore and others
to go ahead the people will follow.
