Why JTot Inform The
Committee
If there is a eitse within three
miles of Brownsville where people
are suffering for want of lood it 1b
because the fact has not been
placed before the relief committee
appointed to distribute funds for
the relief of such suffering This
committee is composed of gentle
men who have all contributed
largely themselves to the fund for
sufferers by drouth and it cannot
be justly said that they would
ueglect ny case of suffering of
which they might be informed The
injustice if any has been done to
these pcor people lies at the door of
the man who instead of hastening
to inform the committee that he
hnd discovered h family in need o1
food hastens to publibh to the
world the fact of the discovery
and endeavors to cast a slur upou
some of our best citizens by sticb
words as the following The relief
committee has been organized now
over two weekswith funds in hand
yet right here within three miles of
MZ
s
who are suffering tho pangs o
hunger Every onu knows that
the committee has been making
every effort to find out and relive
any suffering in the county and
no one will believe that euch men
as the gentlemen composing thig
committee would be guilty of wilj
fully ignoring such distress Any
one knowing of cases where aid is
needed should inmediately make it
known the members and the neces
snry reliet will be at once granted
The Committee is composed o
Messrs G M Rafael Casimiro
Tamayo Emil Kleiber P Ytturria
Robt Dalzell and F San Roman
An application to any of these
gentlemen will receive immediate

JHorc About Waterworks
To the Herald
Waterworks constitutes no ques
tion for controversy On this 1
will shake hands with Mr Idea
> ut as to my incomprehensibility
as to friction in pipes or elsewherei
he is a little off That question of
friction has annoyed many able
tncchuies and but for the perplex
ed question we would have long
ago had perpetual motion Mr
Idea with his pressure calculation
has switched off on hydrodynamics
and left hydraulics A head of
oiill water exerts no foice except
pressure but the instant yi u put it
in motion you encounter that vex
Ml qmstiou of friction which wiU
greatly reduce ymir stored up force
The estimated head 22S to over
come the friction in 1000 feet of
3iucho pipe not hose was bns d
on a flow of 4 foot to the second
Increase this flow and the friction
increases proportionately Speak
ing of tho action of our lire engine
at the late fire I was present and
observed that the action of the en
gine at first did not do much eer
vice but when placed near the
lire the action was gobd and soon
extinguished the fLunes I also ob
served that there was a good force
and the boys worked with a will
and I should judge that there wa6
nearer 50 pounds pressure on the
pump cylinders than 30 I have
heard it rumored that an effort will
be made to get tip a joint stock
company to establish a bystem of
waterworks for domestic and fire
ervice and apply to the city for
a charter as it is well known that
our city is not in a condition to en
fcertain estimates foi the enterprise
t present Until the matter is
taken np for this purpose I bid
adieu to any further discussion of
waterworks through your valuable
columns
