THE SIMPLE FACTS;
New York World.
Ifwehad a duty on tea
every cent paid by the consum
er under it would s:o into the
treasury to. meet the expenses
01 govern menf.
If we had an increase tax on
Leer and tobacco every cent
of it would go into the treasury
for a like purpose.
Neither of these taxes -will
Dedivtded between the treas
ury and any trust or any fa
vored class. Neither would
give the party fn power an ex
cuse for demanding any con
tribution to a campaign' fund
fb 'keep it in power.
But axlutyon hides wil com
pel tire people to pay rich con
tribute to the beef trust. A
duty on raw wool will compel
the people to pay a heavy bo
nus., to tRe wool growers. A
discriminating duty on refined
sugar means the transfer ol
sniUions of the people's money
to' the coffers of the sugar
trust.
But the present- senate is
not legislating for the treasury
or for the people, but for the
. trusts, the favored classes and
the distributers to campaign
funds.
Therefore the proposed
duty on tea and the additional
iax on tobacco and beer are
to be abandoned, while there
is to be a duty on hides, a duty
on wop! and a scandalousl)'
discriminative duty on- refined

PLAY AIT SEA,
-sv
Philadelphia Times, June i. -Durine
a storm at sea elec
tricity played all kinds of
pranks with the tramp steamr
er Mexicano, which put into
to this port yesterday from
Tampico. The Mexicano was
pounding along nicely about
fifteen- miles south of Cape
Hatteras, when a terrific t rain
storm. accompanied4by light
ning, burst upon her.
Iip-ht set in while the crm
height and balls of fire
to shoot down from the ring
ine of the vessel and crack in
pieces on -the, deck. One of
the balls struck the compass
box and the instrument was
rendered temporarily useless.
The Mexicano hove to and
did not proceed until the com-
lpass was repaired and every
evidence of the storm had been
passed by. The crew and cap
tain of the Mexicano agree
that they had never experienc
ed any thing so awerinspiring
and at the same time danger
ous during their years of ser
vice on the higfh seas.
(The Mexicano is the oil
tank steamer which pays fre
quent visits to Galveston.)
The railway metals between
London and Edinburgh, a dis
tance of 400 miles, are 210
yards longer in summer than
they are in winter, owing to
the expansion caused by the
extra heat.
A very durable hard rubber,
a Gernan experimenter claims,
is made by adding powdered
aluminum -to the material bef
ore it is vulcanized.
