Trades and Labor Congiess of Can
ada Which opened in this city today
All sections or Canada are repiesent
ed at the congress which will be In
session about a week In addition to
discussing the usual topics and trans
acting the business relating to the
affairs ot the organization the con
gress this year Is to be given added
Interest by the consideration of the
subject ot labors participation in
politics The example of organized
labor In the United States In taking
an active part In the present political
campaign has attracted much atten
tion among the trades unions of
Canada Opinion as to the wisdom
r following this example however
lffers among the representative lead
ers of the Canadian labor unions and
a spirited discussion is likely to fol
low the Introduction of the subject In
the congress Many are heartily in
iavor of independent political action
In an effort to increase the number of
labors representatives in the Domin
ion parliament and provincial legis
latures Others are inclined to op
pose the plan
ALBERT TAYLORS OVATION
San Antonio Audience Exhibits Most
Enthusiastic Appreciation
The attendance at the Grand
threatre last night demonstrated very
clearly that Albert Taylor and his
excellent company are still the fa
roritles of the San Antonio public
Although the theatre will accommo
date a very large number of spec
tators there was not a vacant seat
in the boxes or chairs when the cur
tain went up on the first act of The
Man From Mexico and the audience
continued to pile in until nearly all
the standing room was occupied The
reception given Mr Taylor when he
appeared on the stage as the play
progressed must have been gratifying
indeed for the applause given was
that of genuine admiration and not
of the formal kind And Mr Taylor
and his company In every way merit

board which Is formulating regula
tions for the enforcement of the pure
food law recently enacted by congress
being a series of public hearings today
to give the food manufacturers and
others Interested an opportunity to
present their views as to the neces
sary regulations Problems connected
with tho enforcement ot the new law
will be discussed and the members of
the board expect to get many practi
cal suggestions from the manufactur
ers Such questions a3 what consti
tutes an original package and an ex
port package flavoring coloring tho
uso of glucose In confectionery harm
ful and harmless adulterants break
fast and proprietary foods and patent
medicines will be taken up A large
number of patent medicine manufac
turers have applied to be heard at the
meetings of the board This fact has
given rise to a belief that the makers
of patent medicines who exerted
every effort to defeat tho food and
drugs act in congress intend to fight
to the last ditch until tho law is
actually put in operation
