Thirteenth District
A senatorial convention of the thir
1 teentli senatorial district was held at
Jacksonville Texas on the 22nd of
August 1908 Tile convention was
called to order by Hon Theo Miller
senatorial chairman and in the ab
sence of the permanent secretary
lion Jas F Brook of Anderson coun
ty was elected secretary At a meet
ing of the senatorial executive com
mittee Mr Chas P Adams of Jack
sonville was elected senatorial chair
man and Hon J J Spurlock of Jack
sonville was elected senatorial secre
tary of the thirteenth senatorial dis
trict jof Texas for the ensuing two
years On motiOD of Hon G W Bur
kitt St of Anderson county a com
mittee of two was appointed to escort
Hr Adams to the chair Messrs Geo
Powell of Cherokee county and Jas
P Brook of Anderson county were ap
pointed as this committee On mo

that the voting has been lively It is
desired that everybody in the city
and county have a hand in the selec
tion of the Queen and Maid The

of votes is on display at the jewelry

brella to be given the Maid or the
lady receiving the second highest
number of votes can be seen in the

Small envelopes have been placed
at the ballot boxes and all that is
necessary for you to do is to fill out
the envelope with name of candidate

The first count will be made to
night and the result announced Tues
day afternoon in the local papers
After the first count the votes will be
counted each night until the close of
the contest the standing of contest
ants being published the following
day Each candidate has the right to
be represented when the count Is
made which will be under the direc
tion of the arrangement committee of
the Labor Day celebration The count
is to be made each night at 8 oclock

San Francisco Cal Aug 24 The
first and second divisions of the Pa
cific fleet accompanied by a flotilla
of torpedo boats leaves San Francis
co today bound on a 2100 mile trip to
Honolulu The fleet will reach its
destination September 3 or 4 and
after a weeks stop for coaling pur
poses will proceed to Samoa 2240
miles distant From Samoa the fleet
will return to Honolulu engaging in a
series of maneuvers on the way and
from Honolulu will go to Magdalena
bay for the final target practice
The fleet comprises the eight ar
mored cruisers Pennsylvania West
Virginia Colorado Maryland South
Dakota California Washington and
Tennessee the fleet tender Charles
ton the Solace the parent ship of the
torpedo vessels and the torpedo boat
destroyers Whipple Truxton Hop
kins Perry Hull Farragut Stewart
and Preble
On the return trip the fleet is
scheduledto arrive at San Diego on
October 28 The vessels will depart
from San Diego two days later for
Magdalena bay where they are due
November 1 The entire month of
November will be spent in target
practice at Magdalena bay On De
cember 4 the fleet will return to San
Francisco

States onthe democratic ticket began
to arrive in the city today With the
exception of a few finishing touches
everything Is in readiness for tomor
rows exercises Indianapolis in holi
day dress for the occasion is prepar
ing tq entertain a large number of
visitors v
The program provides that all the
ceremonies of notification shall take
place at the state fair grounds in the
daytime and that there will be no
downtown demonstration and no
street parade Nevertheless it is ex
pected that the attendance of numer
ous democratic clubs enthused by
the presence in the city of William J
Bryan and a host of prominent party
leaders will result in an impromptu
demonstration of some sort tomorrow
night It is hoped that some of the
visiting orators may be induced to de
liver public speeches
The notification exercises at the
state fair ground will take place in
the coliseum which is one of the larg
est and finest amphitheatres in the
country Arrangements are being
made to accommodate a crowd of fif
teen thousand people in the huge
structure A speakers stand has been
erected at one end of the building
The stand has been made large
enough to afford seating accommoda
tions for the members of the notifica
tion committee the members of the
national committee who will be in at
tendance and a number of specially In
vited guests
The notification speech and the ad
dress of acceptance by Mr Kern will
be brief in order to give ample time
for the delivery of the speech by Mr
Bryan on the subject of trusts which
of course will be the chief feature of
the program Mr Bryan is expected
to reach the city early tomorrow
morning from Chicago accompanied
by National Chairman Mack Both of
the distinguished leaders will be
guests of Mr and Mrs Kern while
in the city
